Sign Design Fail
Thx Ivanov

Google Maps FTW (Thx Qwertz):
Here’s the location. You can even see the signs on the street view, although someone seems to have run over a part of the signs on the left… no doubt trying to read it.

awesome.
you must REALLY love signs.
Like if a sign walked into a bar, you’d be all “DAMN, look at that sign right there, she’s really something- that there sign is a damn one of a kind. They shure don’t make em like that no more. Nope. NOt since the government and all. YEEEHAW-I love signs. I gave birth to a sign once.”
You try to too hard.
bend over and ill show you a sign
you are repetitive
I can’t believe you didn’t go for the “Hey there, hot lookin’ sign, what’s your sign?” joke.
Did you just quote Shamalan?
of course it is in NC. and right outside a liquor store… funny.
Ever heard the term “here’s your sign” ?
Interesting, I grew up not 5 minutes from where this is but I have never even noticed! I shopped at that Harris Teeter!
it is PHOTTOSHOPPED look some of the signs dont have anything holding them up
They’re held up through metal posts on the backside going sideways you noob. Was it the pixels that were throwin ya?
Not phottoshopped, we have a lot of these in NC.
We have bigger ones in Fayetteville, NC.
LOL
Que claro que esta
un dieste mi barco!
it is: hundiste mi barco
3rd! 4th! idiot!
Huh?
This is a stupid fail. I hate it. It looks like some idiot just collected signs. I don’t buy it. Fail fail.
Also, some of the signs don’t even have poles. Photoshop fail.
They don’t have to. If you were to look for longer than two seconds, you would see that the ones that “don’t even have poles” are attached to the others via metal bars.
Eyesight fail.
who want’s to believe their eyes anyway- EYESIGHT WIN!
Um can’t any of you see the link that says HERE’S THE LOCATION?! It’s a real place and you can see another view of the same street sign and it’s REAL. It’s in Concord NC. And yeah, NC has the most effed up road system I’ve ever seen. So does SC. I don’t know what their problem is.
I’ll second that it is real. I live in Concord, NC and drive past it every day.
The roads here are nuckin futs.
Let me just add that I am so happy that they have not mapped my street
yet. My patio is a mess!
I grew up near there, so I’ll third that it’s real – that’s a confusing intersection… and poorly planned.
oh dearie, the link to googlemaps wasn’t there the whole time.
also, i live in SC and while SC is ridiculous as hell regarding having any idea where the hell you’ll end up if you turn onto any given road, NC’s highways make me want to rip my brains out everytime i’m up there. D:
Logic fail.
Susan, July 3rd, that is.
my birthday
You’re a fail! STUPID fail! It’s on a metal bar attached to the pole.
Fail fail – it’s either stuipd win or intelligence fail.
Hey, I live nearby to this and although I don’t drive past it often, I can vouch for this mess of signage. It’s real, and really confusing. Thank goodness I have a GPS or else I’d get lost here in NC!
hahaha….agreed! I love NC….and I’ve come to view navigating through the state as an extra (bonus?) adventure. (randomly pick a street and ignore the signs)
I’ve had GPS fail there, though…
“Turn right on ‘A Local Road’.”
c.c “WTF?”
“At the next signal, make a legal U-turn…” etc.
*sigh* A local road, indeed. c.c
I smell a MU*er.
No Photoshop. that is in PA not far from NJ. don’t remember the city name but I was lost over there looking for the 201. Big trucks and little towns don’t mix!
Iza tard, wrong state. but I was there and it is real. long hual trucker, it’s hard to keep your states streight.
That’s definitely not in PA but in Concord, NC (per the Google map link and personal experience, having lived there).
seeing fail
Notice the horizontal poles. This is North Carolina for you. I know of a few places like this around my area.
i think you fail to understand the complexity of american idiocy or laziness.
hey…theres already a pole there….why dont we just nail this here sign up there sos we aint gotta dig no hole.
Have you every been to jersey?
This is for real…This pic is found in Concord, NC. I drive by this often. you can actually mapquest concord NC and see that intersection of numbered hell.
“This is a stupid fail. I hate it. It looks like some idiot just collected signs. I don’t buy it. Fail fail.”
COMMENT FAIL
Bullshit, I live there and those signs are real. It just happens to be an intersection of several important roads. Of course it could be designed better but it’s kind of a joke around here so I don’t think anyone wants to get rid of it. Plus if you have your bearings, all of the signs make sense.
This should’ve been in National Lampoon’s Vacation movie. Which way is Wally World??
Hah, you’re right.
this looks like north carolina. the most f*cked up road design and maintenance system known to man.
trufax
and yeah…photoshop fail.
Not a photoshop fail. It’s the real thing, dickwad.
it really is real. i lived in that state for a while. i’ve that kind of shit there before
sounds like theyre trying to keep you in state to spend money. indiana does the same thing only they have a blackhole that uses its gravity field to suck you close to indianapolis.
way to get way too offended over the internets, bb.
Causing travelers to give up and head for home since 1968!
but what will cause travelers to give head-i’m still trying to figure that one out. cause RUFIES don’t work.
neither does hot coffee
depends on the kind of hitchhiker you pick up.
George Carlin ref FTW!
Best is that you turn left for East 73, but go straight for East-Truck 73, which is also West 73(normal and truck).
Reminds me of the George Carlin bit about Outer Mongolia and Inner Mongolia.
“The Asian country known as Mongolia used to be called Outer Mongolia. And just below the Outer Mongolian border with China there was an autonomous region called Inner Mongolia. And since each of them had its own inner and outer regions, that means that at one time there existed, fairly close to one another, an “outer Inner Mongolia” and an “inner Outer Mongolia.” I like that sort of thing. I like picturing the road signs and all the people taking wrong turns.”
I miss George so hard.
George makes me so hard too
I bet goerge is hard. stiff more like it
Wow. You are a real weiner.
un/intended pun WIN
if it was unintended, they would have spelled it right. logic FAIL
Why, thank you.
This is in Charlotte, NC. I’ve seen it before.
Really? I live like thirty minutes from Charlotte, perhaps I should go find it sometime.
good luck finding your way home!
Actually, I believe this is Concord, NC, about 20 mi northeast of Charlotte (I grew up there).
But for all the “fail” nature of the signage … this part of the U.S. is currently one of the only areas where housing property values are actually rising, rather than going in concertedly fail direction.
So maybe that’s the answer to the housing crisis: post more highway signs?
You’ve got to be kidding me. EVERY SINGLE PERSON thinks that ‘thier’ part of the housing slump isn’t affected. If it were to be true for a place, then I’d guess some ultra-rich part of somewhere, like Scottsdale or Mission Beach. 20 minutes outside of Charlotte is NOT one of those places.
Owned.
Charlotte is one of those places.
Is “thier” the possessive of “thiy?”
Oh, you owned me so much. I was going by the national news reports of LAST WEEK. I see that today ABC News reports that the Charlotte area, as of July 2, is for the first time experiencing a downward trend in home prices … of 0.1%.
For the first time? How long has the housing bust went on now?
Your Failboat stays the course!
*yawn* … this is getting tedious … or should I say this is has went on now tedious long?
Manhattan, Charlotte, N.C., Seattle and Portland, Ore., have all been in the news for NOT experiencing the housing bust that has “went on now” so long for the rest of the U.S. As of the past week, however, it is now being reported that they too are experiencing downturns, though not to the extent most of the country has.
Methinks CaeruleanBalls and Peach Fuzz should get out more.
Judging by those two locations, you live in somewhere in AZ and have spent many a summer in San Diego (like all Arizonians) – amirite?
Kannapolis is a town that is butted up against Concord. Concord is barely 20 minutes north of Charlotte on I-85, and other state highways. Kannapolis is in the process of building an effing HUGE biotechnical research park. Land values aren’t super, but they aren’t awful, either. The influx of rich doctor-y research types has the potential to raise the values in the area, including Charlotte, greatly once the park is up and running. This means that, thanks to speculators and investors, property values have at least stayed level if not rising because of the potential influx of money.
Also, I used to leave near Concord, and I go through it all the time. The sign is real. There’s a similar stretch of highway in between Greensboro and Raliegh that has two interstate highways, two “business” interstate highways, and no less than three state highways in one 55MPH skinny two lane piece of ill-kept concrete.
ssssst…..”Base we have visual…copy????”….ssssst. “Roger, Blue7….Confirm.”ssssst
“Copy, base…..We have Charlotte and the surrounding area locked on.”sssssst…….”Roger Blue7….Release when ready.”sssssst…..”Roger, base….One away!…..Goodbye blue Monday!!!”ssssst. “Base, this is Blue7…Gimme a vector I’m comin’ home!”ssssst
You try and find your way back home with a sign like that!
Sneaky… make the road system so confusing that no one can ever leave. They might as well just move there.
They have to buy 2 or 3 houses, since they keep losing them.
Not anymore, we’re going down by now.
I tracked it down on google maps, this is in Concord, NC.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=mount+airy+nc&ie=UTF8&ll=35.416754,-80.606861&spn=0.093731,0.150375&z=13
URL simplicity FAIL
Google maps is photoshopped
actually, it is. but only to make it so you can’t see the car that went around taking the pictures.
Own’t
i guess im odd, that sign makes perfect sense to me if you realize its a corner and the left 3 are from one direction and the other are from a different one…
you’re far too intelligent to be here then.
I like how East Truck 73 and West Truck 73 both go the same direction. Only in North Carolina.
I 580 West and I 80 East share the same roadway for a couple of miles near San Francisco. Right coast, left coast, makes no difference.
It would be easier for the drivers if there was no signs at all
1253 US-29 N, Concord, NC, 28025. It’s on Google Maps Streetview.
~Q
Technology WIN!
You are close Qwertz, the intersection is the one just north of the one you’ved mapped. The view is looking south from US 29/US601.
Detoit just goes with one sign that says “To All Highways” and then you figure it out from there.
I’m in Delaware. Directions are easy here, it’s so small you just drive a couple miles in any direction and you end up in another state, making it their problem.
Delaware WIN! Not like there’s anything worth driving to outside of New Castle County besides the beaches anyway.
Detroit is a fucking armpit, too.
True dat.
Apparently west and south are in the same direction, east is to the left, to the right is a black hole…
And who’s on first?
soon…no, then. but when will then be now?
to the right is actually a taco stand. I’ve been there. Mexican’s own it and they make lamb taco’s all day. It’s actually the same spot Julie Andrews got raped by a whole train of train robbers. It was amazing.
haha?
jaaaaayzus!
Laughing till a chunk of watermelon shot out my right tear duct WIN
hahaha awesome fail.
yikes. That might as well be one large sign saying “here, look at this while you drive into me or go off the road”
ZOMG DOUBLE POST
Not for nothing, but the ad next to this fail pic is for “Pennsylvania accident lawyers”. That got a laugh out of me.
I would give this an Epic Fail. If you look to the sign’s right a little ways in Google StreetView, there’s a liquor store. NC Signage + liquor store + North Cack-a-lack-ee folks = Epic Fail.
Fuck it, just turn left.
Concord, NC. Welcome to NASCAR country, Y’all. Typical NC DOT efficiency there.
These signs have got to be posted somewhere in the American Deep South. To me, there is no other explanation for such nonsense.
Ever been to Salt Lake City? You can go east on Temple, turn south on Temple, make another right on Temple, turn north on Temple… and end up where you started. 4 roads, 1 name.
Yeah, in Charlotte there’s an intersection where Sharon Rd and Queens Rd intersect with….Sharon Rd. and Queens Rd. The pic of the road sign ends up on every article about confusing roads in the city.
hey don’t forget going north on south tryon or south on north tryon…and north on south blvd. most everything here is cool cept the damn roads and drivers. (harris blvd ftl)
I’ve heard of a road to nowhere but a road to everywhere? What a wonderous, magical road it must be! Haha!
Hey, that’s just two counties over from me!
In Greensboro, back before they made bypasses for 220 and 421, they merged in with the place where I-40 and I-85 come together for awhile. At that time, you could have gone west on 421, north on I-85, east on I-40, and south on 220. So, you were going north, south, east, and west all at the same time. Man, I wish I had a picture of that!
Lack of visual evidence FAIL, but funny description WIN!
All these signs! This is madness!
Madness? THIS IS CONCORD!
lol. win.
Glad you think so.
I’ve been at that intersection. The trick is to drive AWAY from it, then figure out where you are, then get to the road you need to be on WITHOUT going back through.
Up in MA where I live, you can be driving north on 1 and 1A while heading south on I-95 and 128. Also, the same bit of road is route 3 and I-93 for a stretch, both of those heading in opposing compass-wise directions. And meanwhile, that section of road actually runs east-west, so if you are thinking a dashboard-mounted compass will help you, you’re sadly mistaken.
Sounds like where I live in VA. One stretch of highway (one road) has 3 different numbers going East, West, and South… I’m not sure what direction the actual road goes, for all I know, Its north.
the highway on the other side of the city has only 2 numbers, but still runs in opposite directions (29N is 501S, and 29S is 501N)
Couldn’t they have just had ONE sign that said “All Trucks” ^
?
That’d eliminate a bunch of these…
Not fail, I’ve seen more complicated sign arrays and not been confused. The only fail is in anyone that has a problem with it. OP wins at displaying self-failure.
unsubstantiated fail
to quote from above: you’re too intelligent to be here.
OMG !!! this is right down the road from my house.
Are you sure this isn’t Alabama? The whole God damn state was like this. I never thought I would actually be ‘happy’ to see the Mississippi border.
Used to be a good pizza place around that intersection … it FAIL’d cause nobody could follow the directions.
imagine a woman driving seeing this. that’s right, I went there.
Well its clearer than the GPS…
Dang yall, now THAT is freaking confusing!

This is just the tip of the iceberg for sign fail in North Carolina. 440 in Raleigh is signed variously as North/South, Inner/Outer, and East/West. There’s still an old sign up that says 50, 64, and 70 are routed along I-40, which hasn’t been true for years. Greensboro has an area where there are six highways multiplexed, that go north, south, and east all at the same time! And don’t even get me started on Rocky Mount.
ONE HUNDRED FORTEENTH!
So many signs *brain apsload*
Sadly, I’ve encountered similar signs, so I doubt it’s photoshopped. It is actually possible to decipher the meaning of the signs, but not in the time you have while driving 35 mph or faster.
As soon as I looked at this picture, I thought, these roads are familiar.
It’s pretty obvious that you are viewing this from a corner so that explains why it looks weird….but I wont deny that some pretty strange signs exist in North Carolina. I’m from Charlotte and have always lived in the region, my favorite is the intersection Queens and Queens.
Its one of our efforts to slow down the influx of Yankees, hoping to frustrate them to death, but its backfired in that all the migrated Floridians are creating traffic chaos while trying to sort it all out.
Just kidding, had to attempt some kind of joke.
But srsly, all the people driving with Florida tags around here really can’t drive. I’m not saying that to be mean, its just fact. Does anyone else have any thoughts on that? Are they nervous because they can’t see for 30 miles in every directions or something?
Don’t forget Sharons Corners, the intersection of Sharon and Sharon.
You FAILed to mention
at the Queens and Queens intersection, the other two corners are Providence and Providence!
Yes, Charlotte and surrounding areas are wonderful for “double” streets…as for the signs in Concord, the building in the background is an ABC store (liquor store, for non NC residents!)
Bwahahahahah!
I grew up here. The signs are in front of the town’s liquor store, and there’s even more FAIL that you can’t see — when I was a kid, the local churches would go to that liquor store and photograph your license plate! With people like that living there, no wonder the signs are fscked!
fail ail il l
a) glad to see some folx eventually mentioned the ABC store that seems to have been visited by the sign and/or highway designers.
b) another NC fun fact is that if you drive a little ways out of Durham on I-85 South, you’re actually heading about west-NORTHwest. (and vice versa heading east from the 85/40 split.)
c) that said, the years i spent driving in NC were *way* less frustrating than the 5 years i’ve spent driving in CT. even confusing signs — well, maybe not the ones pictured here, but in general… — give you a better shot than no signs at all or, my fave, signs you can’t see until it’s too late to get in the lane in question.
I can believe the front line of signs, but not the three that turn the corner.
I think the most amusing thing is the fact that all of the signs in the foreground point the same direction except one 73-East. Also why I think the corner sgns were Photoshopped, because the final 73 is the only one without a direction designation…
Nope, signs aren’t photoshopped…..I live less than a mile from this sign. A couple roads go by 2 highway names (601 and 29 for instance). The funniest part is about a mile away is Hwy 85 and it’s not even mentioned. And yes, that’s a liquor store in the background…and a hospital across the street. Cheers!
It’s not photoshop, but it is deceiving. The 72-29-601 signs are actually behind the other ones – nice camerawork to make it look like they’re all next to each other, though.
I dont see the faill… everything is right… ye its a lot of signs but ….. it all is right:P
Figures this is in North Carolina…
This is actually not that unusual. Here’s another example of such signage that is equally ridiculous, among many others that are out there:
http://www.millenniumhwy.net/summa/summa-Pages/Image290.html
Even here in California we had an overly complicated highway system before it was simplified in the mid-1960:
http://gbcnet.com/ushighways/us_pix/99_pics/colton_overhead_sign_1960.jpg
Oh shit. I know where that is.
I grew up right around there; that’s infront of the Harris Teeter. I remember laughing at that.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
BEHOLD THE CROSSROADS OF AMERICA!!!!
if you look at the intersection on google maps that sign doesnt exist
Just move the viewpoint back a bit. You’ll then get an older picture which still shows all the signs.
I tried the street view and I saw three signs together, but not ten
Nevermind, I found it.
no part’s real, part’s not – click the “here’s the location” and go to “street view” you’ll see 3 signs, not all those
i take it back it’s real OMG
nice….
