From what I understand, this is very common for the countries in the Middle East and Africa. Antennas and satellite dishes abound while the homes are in poor condition. I won’t pretend that I know the reasons, but I might guess that culturally it is very important to be in the “know,” and there could be all sorts of inhibitors to home improvement (like war, oppressive governments, unavailability of materials, etc.).

The dish antenna is a portion of a paraboloid, but it is offset from the center. The focus is way down low at the LNA. That means that the antenna is aimed at something on the order of 60 degrees above the horizon.
The house is built to keep out the rain, but not to keep in the heat, so it is near the equator. Mexico seems plausible.
In places where the weather isn’t extreme, you don’t need much of a house. It looks like they even have some privacy, since there aren’t any other houses near by.

As much as I hate to admit it, this is par for the course in my home state of WVa, where every POS trailer has a massive satellite dish in the next to 3 cars on blocks and a yard full of broken appliances. Live there. Saw it often.

This isn’t all that uncommon actually, especially in central Mexico – The Mexican government got it into its head a while back that they could improve the lives of campesinos/farmers/etc by giving them free technology.
So they sent out a bunch of solar panels to people who don’t use electricity for much of anything. They also sent out satellite dishes to people with no TV’s, and so on.
A lot of the stuff gets used to hang drying clothes on, for decoration, or is just kinda left sitting out because nobody can figure out what to do with it.
This is a classic example of failure of Govt planning.
While it may make sense to most free market countries, where its natural to consider having a better house a priority over having Television and Cable TV, but in Govt planned economies this is a common scenario.
The point is Govt has shoved its hand down deep into the throat of housing market. These people are not owning those lands, but either are sitters on it(that’s why they cannot afford to make permanent homes on it), or are given Slum ownership certificates(which will become void if they gentrify their house).
In simple words it makes much more sense for them to do non-permanent investments on their property(like buying a dish antenna or television, even telephone and internet), but not into something permanent like a better house because they will end up losing it.
what’s the point of making your home all fancy if you know its not gonna last?

The occupant of the house is most likely Gipsy. major income of this families is from children allowance and it is part of their “politics” – make 10 children,feed them shit and keep money for alcohol/cigarettes. their other income is from stolen goods…more than 90% of gypsies in eastern europe never worked,was willing to work or will ever work…

The picture is taken in Romania. I live there. That DIGI antenna is for TV obviously, the company has a special offer, actually it is very very cheap to have that DIGI service. That guy is poor, however he affords the antenna.

I live in Romania… and yes, there are poor families like this one in my country that live in such houses… It’s either all they can afford or it’s given to them by the town hall if they’re homeless, but it sure as hell beats living in a cardboard box, in garbage infested slums or alleyways…
