    YES! First comment.

Great work. I would have crashed the building in minutes.

    Last

  4. MrJuul says:

lol.. Who will ever go into that again, to place more explosives? :)

    • Lan Mordreth says:

This was actually done near where I live I believe. Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They ended up having to just demolish it the “old fashioned” way if I remember right. Stupid sturdy buildings.

      • Speedy says:

the guy talking reminds me of earl on my name is earl

      • Arik says:

Actually it looks like the charges did not fire as expected.

      • cjk says:

No, stupid is the guy who did not figure out it was sturdy and did not place enough tnt.

        • Aletheia says:

They probably didn’t use pure TNT. Considering how strong the rest of the building is, and how it does not crush the lower corner, it is probably steel/iron framed, so they would have used shaped charges for the supports.

      • Rachel says:

Actually, you’re right. This is the Zip Feed Mill.

Basically: Some out of towners decided it needed to be blown up. This things 100 years old, and they expected it to be a lot weaker, since they didn’t bother to think that it was a FEED MILL and built to withstand being filled to the top with grain.

So yeah. There was a big fuss about it, everyone was watching, and…one floor went down. Heads were rolling. I lol’d.

And no, explosives were working as intended.

        • Carrie says:

Especially since they made such a big deal about it beforehand. News coverage, and didn’t they have a drawing for who got to push the button to detonate it? That part is even funnier than simply the fail. :)

Set back the Phillips Avenue project a ways as well, if I recall right, due to having to drop it with the wrecking ball.

    • ozyran says:

Personally, I was hoping to see a laser guided bomb dropped down the center of the building to knock it down :D

  5. Daan says:

    Rofl, priceless

  6. justam says:

hehe. the builders built it slightly too strong huh?

        • Stan and Kyle says:

Actually, we found out that the government actually came up with the 9/11 conspiracies. The idea was that by doing so, people would think the government was powerful enough to pull off such an elaborate plot, therefore making people think the government is more powerful than it is.

    • Kid Choronsom says:

Exactly…Anyone who doesn’t realise that wtc taken down by explosives in the building should review their high school physics book….(if they study physics in american schools that is….I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t)

      • Aletheia says:

Making stupids feel stupid win ;-)
For an understandable version, look it up on the interwebs. It’ll explain how it was brought down in just over the amount of time it would have taken for an object dropped at the top to reach the bottom, etc.
        Sen. Ted Stevens fail!

      • Steve D. says:

Controlled Demolition? Logic Fail. Controlled demolition means wiring the main columns on every floor to guide the building down. Nobody, not even the 9/11 Truth movement has evidence saying that people went in and did any kind of major work on the building enabling such access to critical structural components. If you can’t get access to the actual structural supports, if nobody witnesses anybody doing anything of that kind, then it’s not difficult to eliminate it.

Force equals mass times acceleration. more than ten or twenty floors falling onto the floor below it is a shitload of mass accelerating at thirty-two feet per second per second. There isn’t a whole lot that’s designed to take not merely the dead load of that weight, and the acceleration forces of it. Hence: A Structural fail. And then another, and then another, as each floor folds under the accelerated weight of that above it.

And of course for those who insist on believe that things getting blown out the windows means explosives, consider this: the building was mostly air, which was kept clear by the material supporting the floor above. That gives way, the air doesn’t magically escape. It blows out, and all the concrete dust gets blown out with it.

  21. chez says:

guess they shouldn’t have put all those charges in the bomb shelter huh?

  22. dbs says:

This is actually a pretty bad situation for the demolition folks. A failed take down leaves the building in a ridiculously unstable state, and it’s very very very dangerous. They don’t just ‘blow it up again’. If the other posters were right, and that this building had to be taken down ‘by hand’, that would have cost the demolition folks a heck of a lot of money.

Bet they lost their hats on this one :(

  23. minishaw says:

Off topic, but who says “first” anymore? Is there a trophy for that or something?

  25. knob says:

    builder 1, demolisher 0

I suspect there were charges placed in the upper sections to deal with that, but that they somehow failed to go off. Usually there is sequencing done to have all the charges go off within a matter of second – but where the lower charges won’t fire if the upper chargest fail.

  28. sufferpuppet says:

Since nobody has pointed it out yet I feel the need to tell everybody that this video is photoshopped. The shadows are all wrong. The windows of the building were clearly cut and pasted. Or, whatever else it is that photoshop whores cry about.

Heh, that was about 2 miles from my house in Sioux Falls, SD! The demo company got the job with their bid ($400,000)… but they did it cheap-o-ish, and FAILED! They still had to finish the job for their agreed $400k… they lost a ton o’ money on it. They ended up taking a wrecking ball to the rest of it, iirc. There’s a big office complex there now…

This took place in good ol’ Sioux Falls, SD. I was there to watch it in person, which was actually pretty disappointing, considering all the advertising (that’s what the BOOM! thing was) that had gone on. Apparently the guy who was in charge of the demolition has a reputation for failure.

  55. Galhar says:

Unfortunately now the building is unstable and it’s not safe to enter, so they can’t go in to place more charges. It must have been really hard to safely finish this job. I wonder what they did?

Glad they could truck in gallagher for the commentary
