Nice spot, but where is this?

peter

its a navy building near to san diego i guess

Frith Ra

Right, it’s on the US Navy base just outside of San Diego. I saw it on Google Earth once.

wolfgang schuster

see link: ‘original story’ under the photo.

du bist ein fail

Jenny

The correct german would be:

Du bist ,,Fail”.

It’s like the “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. When you are saying something is something in German, you don’t use the ‘ein’

Anonymous

smartass fail.
if the 2nd something is a noun, both ways are correct (ich bin berliner/ich bin ein berliner).

TheLarrikin

Indeed - ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ is proper German grammar, and therefore, ‘Du bist ein Fail.’

I don’t know where the doughnut legend spawned, but it’s completely untrue.

sandy

in many places in germany (not berlin) there is a doughnut that is frequently
referred to as a “Berliner”. of course, men from berlin also refer to themselves
as “Berliner.”

Here’s a link to clear the confusion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mu02xUgE4k

Ahos

First of all; you would never say ‘Du bist [ein] Fail’. Are you calling a specific person a failure here? What you would say as a general caption would more typically be ‘Das ist ein Fehlschlag/Fehler/Versagen’.
If you have to be grammatically correct.

Flunky Carter

You’re enforcing grammaticals on a website that embraces broken english speak. U IZ DEH FAILZ.

thank god for someone who didn’t say first… :D

what is the fail here? It a symbol of fortune, or not? Take a look to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika .

Reclaim the symbols!!

Greetings from Berlin

Jenny

I agree. And all these people failing at german.

fox

And you are failing at English grammar.

Em

And so are you (and I) for beginning a sentence with a conjunction.

Jenny

It’s not grammatically incorrect to begin with a conjunction. That’s a myth they teach you in grade school, mostly so little kids don’t write compositions like, “And then we went to the park. And it was fun. And it was cool.” But it’s not incorrect.

Skye

Nice double negative. Correction fail.

Yeah — I actually learned this from manga (go figure), Blade of the Immortal: The main character in Blade of the Immortal, Manji, has taken the “crux gammata” as both his name and his personal symbol. This symbol is also known as the swastika, a name derived from the Sanskrit svastika (meaning “welfare,” from su- “well” + asti “he is”). As a symbol of prosperity and good fortune, the swastika was widely used throughout the ancient world (for example, appearing often on Mesopotamian coinage), including North and South America and has been used in Japan as a symbol of Buddhism since ancient times. To be precise, the symbol generally used by Japanese Buddhists is the sauvastika, which moves in a counterclockwise direction, and is called the manji in Japanese. The arms of the swastika, which point in a clockwise direction, are generally considered a solar symbol. It was this version (the hakenkreuz) that was perverted by the Nazis. The sauvastika generally stands for night and often for magical practices. It is important that readers understand that the swastika has ancient and honorable origins, and it is those that apply to this story, which takes place in the 18th century [ca. 1782-3]. There is no anti-Semitic or pro-Nazi meaning behind the use of the symbol in this story. Those meanings did not exist until after 1910. (I believe that is verbatim.) Now, that doesn’t mean that someone didn’t fail; but I don’t believe we need to waste the taxpayers’ money — I agree with the “let’s take the symbols back!”

damnedgamer

wow bill german. 3rd and wtf nazi time is back?!? GET OUT THE PUMPGUNS!

mica

the swastica, two sowilo’s interlocked, is the old germanic (by old i mean 10th century and earlier) symbol for the sun, and was meant to convey harmony and peace. It was never meant to be a symbol of hate.

Just because Hilter (a half-jew with major inadaquacy issues and syphlis in his brain) warped it to his purposes doesnt mean we can’t take it back.

Dark

Hey, that is bullshit. It’s all rumours and propganda. Try researching, not believing what you are told to.

Picardkid

The swastika was actually found in caves that were suspected to originally have been homes to ancient Aryans. It then came to symbolize the Aryan race, and by extension, the Nazis.

Random Chick

Judaism is a religion, not a race. You can’t be half Jewish. That is like being half Christian and half Atheist, it makes no F@$#ing sense.

I think you mean Hebrew, which is the original race that hailed from Jerusalum, and who were mainly Jewish. Just because most Americans are Christian and or Catholic, it doesn’t make it a race.

To clear all the rumors about Hitler: He was not gay; he did not have syphils in his brain, because we didn’t have MRI technology back then, and we have no idea where Hitler’s body is so we can not run tests; He was not half Jewish, as I just explained above, his reason for his hatred for Jews is unknown, but some think it is because of the mainly Jewish counsil that rejected him from art school.

Second, do not believe everything you read in a manga book, it is fiction for a reason. e.g. There are no such accourances of millions of busty, horny, asian chicks fighting crime, researching “Indiana Jones” type archaeological sites, and assassinating corrupt galactic leaders.

Taylor

Actually, Hitler picked up his hatred of Jews from literature he read. His art failure had nothing to do with it.
It’s not like he started the whole thing…Jews were pretty unpopular in and around Germany at the time.

farrex

there they have hitler in criogenic state thats why nobody found him. also to elvis that he was secretly the hitler´s song and now he is also in criogenic state.

yups where is the fail place located

Jessameena

This symbol was originally a universal symbol of human harmony and peace.

oWn4g3

So it is a FAIL in a Navy Base…

kannadzuki

That’s only the case when the points are to the left, I believe. When they go to the right, it’s the nazi one.

Anonymous

U failed! they point at the “nazi” direction in the pic. If it would be in 45degree angle it would be perfect

Dark

Incorrect, both are used as good luck symbols in a few of teh more ancient religions. Just everyone suddenly saw all swastikas as evil when Hitler used it.

ahaha

Nazi Base in San Diego :D? US fail :p

skoozi

Yeep! What’s with the swatchika? <<Sorry, I can’t spell right now, still waking up!

molesticide

it would have been easier to correct yourself than comment.

Dark

Drink a nice cup of coffee. That should do the trick.

Of course, then you get hooked and have to drink more and more and more…

I know there is said to be a building that looks like a swastika somewhere in a US navy base (saw it at Google Earth, at least), but afaik, that was one _single_ building.
Am I really the only one who thinks this one looks damn photoshopped? Just look at the “roofs” of the buildings…
I really hate those guys who keep shouting “photoshopped!!!” at every pic that looks strange, but I mean, come on…

Kirsten

It’s not photoshopped other than the fact they made the swastika shaped buildings a little brighter. I’m looking at the actual google map now, and that is the actual building. But, like the comments to the story attest,

Go here - Swastika Building Map and then zoom out some, and look to the left of the swastika building. You will see two other buildings that have the appearance of airplanes… someone said it was symbolism of the US coming to bomb the Nazis.

Dark

I agree, they do look like they are intentionally meant to look like planes.

But if they meant to bomb Germany, they were really off target.

Anonymous

Nope, it is on google earth, so its not photoshopped

Amanda

This one’s actually real, it’s a navy base, I remember reading about it like, a few months ago.

Jami

It’s over on Snopes.com - it’s real.

it IS on google earth, and if you scroll out and look lower and left you will see 2 other *shaped* buildings that represent allied bombers that are *aimed* at that one.

BGee

I just looked at all three sets of buildings together, and no way is this fail. Purely intentional architectural cartooning.

Dark

Wouldn’t it be awesome if more architects did stuff like this? Although I’m sure most idiots would just make a giant phallus or something…
