in many places in germany (not berlin) there is a doughnut that is frequently
referred to as a “Berliner”. of course, men from berlin also refer to themselves
as “Berliner.”
When you identify yourself in German, you *never* use “ein”. In English, we need the article (as in, “I am _a_ teacher”). It’s not so in German.
The doughnut thing spawned, because that’s exactly what JFK said. “Ich bin ein Berliner” means “I am a jelly-filled doughnut”. “Ich bin Berliner” means “I hail from Berlin”.
Dude, in German you can well use “ein” when you identify yourself. Ich bin Lehrer. Ich bin ein Lehrer. Ich bin Münchener. Ich bin ein Münchener. Wie kannst’n du als “German speaker” sagen, dass man nie das Wort “ein” benutzt, wenn man von sich spricht?
First of all; you would never say ‘Du bist [ein] Fail’. Are you calling a specific person a failure here? What you would say as a general caption would more typically be ‘Das ist ein Fehlschlag/Fehler/Versagen’.
If you have to be grammatically correct.
It’s not grammatically incorrect to begin with a conjunction. That’s a myth they teach you in grade school, mostly so little kids don’t write compositions like, “And then we went to the park. And it was fun. And it was cool.” But it’s not incorrect.
Yeah — I actually learned this from manga (go figure), Blade of the Immortal: The main character in Blade of the Immortal, Manji, has taken the “crux gammata” as both his name and his personal symbol. This symbol is also known as the swastika, a name derived from the Sanskrit svastika (meaning “welfare,” from su- “well” + asti “he is”). As a symbol of prosperity and good fortune, the swastika was widely used throughout the ancient world (for example, appearing often on Mesopotamian coinage), including North and South America and has been used in Japan as a symbol of Buddhism since ancient times. To be precise, the symbol generally used by Japanese Buddhists is the sauvastika, which moves in a counterclockwise direction, and is called the manji in Japanese. The arms of the swastika, which point in a clockwise direction, are generally considered a solar symbol. It was this version (the hakenkreuz) that was perverted by the Nazis. The sauvastika generally stands for night and often for magical practices. It is important that readers understand that the swastika has ancient and honorable origins, and it is those that apply to this story, which takes place in the 18th century [ca. 1782-3]. There is no anti-Semitic or pro-Nazi meaning behind the use of the symbol in this story. Those meanings did not exist until after 1910. (I believe that is verbatim.) Now, that doesn’t mean that someone didn’t fail; but I don’t believe we need to waste the taxpayers’ money — I agree with the “let’s take the symbols back!”
the swastica, two sowilo’s interlocked, is the old germanic (by old i mean 10th century and earlier) symbol for the sun, and was meant to convey harmony and peace. It was never meant to be a symbol of hate.
Just because Hilter (a half-jew with major inadaquacy issues and syphlis in his brain) warped it to his purposes doesnt mean we can’t take it back.
The swastika was actually found in caves that were suspected to originally have been homes to ancient Aryans. It then came to symbolize the Aryan race, and by extension, the Nazis.
Judaism is a religion, not a race. You can’t be half Jewish. That is like being half Christian and half Atheist, it makes no F@$#ing sense.
I think you mean Hebrew, which is the original race that hailed from Jerusalum, and who were mainly Jewish. Just because most Americans are Christian and or Catholic, it doesn’t make it a race.
To clear all the rumors about Hitler: He was not gay; he did not have syphils in his brain, because we didn’t have MRI technology back then, and we have no idea where Hitler’s body is so we can not run tests; He was not half Jewish, as I just explained above, his reason for his hatred for Jews is unknown, but some think it is because of the mainly Jewish counsil that rejected him from art school.
Second, do not believe everything you read in a manga book, it is fiction for a reason. e.g. There are no such accourances of millions of busty, horny, asian chicks fighting crime, researching “Indiana Jones” type archaeological sites, and assassinating corrupt galactic leaders.
Actually, Hitler picked up his hatred of Jews from literature he read. His art failure had nothing to do with it.
It’s not like he started the whole thing…Jews were pretty unpopular in and around Germany at the time.
there they have hitler in criogenic state thats why nobody found him. also to elvis that he was secretly the hitler´s song and now he is also in criogenic state.
Incorrect, both are used as good luck symbols in a few of teh more ancient religions. Just everyone suddenly saw all swastikas as evil when Hitler used it.
I know there is said to be a building that looks like a swastika somewhere in a US navy base (saw it at Google Earth, at least), but afaik, that was one _single_ building.
Am I really the only one who thinks this one looks damn photoshopped? Just look at the “roofs” of the buildings…
I really hate those guys who keep shouting “photoshopped!!!” at every pic that looks strange, but I mean, come on…
It’s not photoshopped other than the fact they made the swastika shaped buildings a little brighter. I’m looking at the actual google map now, and that is the actual building. But, like the comments to the story attest,
Go here – Swastika Building Map and then zoom out some, and look to the left of the swastika building. You will see two other buildings that have the appearance of airplanes… someone said it was symbolism of the US coming to bomb the Nazis.
it IS on google earth, and if you scroll out and look lower and left you will see 2 other *shaped* buildings that represent allied bombers that are *aimed* at that one.
It’s a barrack on the Coronado Navy base, near San Diego. It was built 50 years ago and the architects knew it looked like a swastika (supposedly, it was a completely innocent mistake) but thought that nobody would ever see it from above for long enough to figure out what it looks like.
It is real, I grew up in Coronado, Ca and have actually been inside that building. As has already been said it is on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado just across the bay from San Diego. It is a barracks building.
That’ll probably be where the word comes from. Remember, English is really messed up because of the amount of civilisations we were invaded by… Romans, the French, Norwegians (Vikings), Germans (Anglo-Saxons) etc., etc….
It’s really not a fail. As others have already mentioned, not only is the swatstika originally a symbol of fortune (which is why the nazis chose it), the design element is intentional, and this pic is cutting out other, vital info. It’s intentional misquoting in picture form.
The only thing that is in any way “fail” about this design is that the military is now spending millions of dollars to change the design so that no swastika is apparent from the air/space. If this particular swastika was colored black within a white disc on a red background, well, then it would be truly “fail”. Otherwise it’s just a neat design.
I don’t get why people would be upset with it. It is a good design, the Swastika has been found as far back as the Neolithic period. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika.
Edjumication is a good thing and could prevent many a fail, or finding it where there really isn’t any.
You are teh fail. It’s W not O. And ” (two single apostrophes) not ” (double quote), before Google Maps accepts it. FFS, just use 32.675384,-117.158573
Okay, so I have to ask…if this was built 50 years ago, that puts it shortly after WWII ended…did any of the German scientists who came over here under Project Paperclip ever work at this particular Navy base?
Excuse me, what is a fail here?
This is correct swastika, not the anti-clockwise evil one. A swastika can not be considered evil only because some gun-nut people hater used it. It has been a symbol for 4 thousand years.
And yes i would repeat, there are two orientations to the swastika. This is the correct one. no fail here.
My hometown of Decatur, Alabama is home to Wesley Acres, a retirement home, that looks just like a Swastika.

I trained as a SEAL in 2003, was an active member, and I would like to state that this building shown is not the “SEAL barracks layer” or is in any way used outside of training. SEALs, by the nature of their mission, are not stationed permanently in the United States at a barracks. Most SEALs have homes, families and live outside of the usual military “barrack” living conditions. While I respect the funny nature of the design of the building, please be very careful about what and who you say is affiliated with it. Gotta admit though, that was an EPIC fail of architecture.
And to clear it up:
-Feil is related to “heil”, which obviously appears to be funny to you.
It ALSO is related to Fail, as an English word.
-You can say both, “ich bin ein berliner” and “ich bin berliner”,
and in berlin they dont say “berliner” to that pancake-thingy!
-You have to learn alot aout german history, if u think that is funny.
also u shouldnt make fun about hitler when u rtalk to a german,
cus we are really sensitive about tht topic!
I just have to say- this is not the Nazi symbol. As Hitler was against the new order, he wanted to reverse everything, so the cross-endings should be counter- clockwise. This symbol is the one, Hitler got his idea from, but he modified it a bit.

Nice spot, but where is this?
fail
its a navy building near to san diego i guess
Right, it’s on the US Navy base just outside of San Diego. I saw it on Google Earth once.
They also have a set of buildings like this in Phoenix, Arizona.
Forget crossroads.. but yeah.
see link: ‘original story’ under the photo.
du bist ein fail
The correct german would be:
Du bist ,,Fail”.
It’s like the “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. When you are saying something is something in German, you don’t use the ‘ein’
smartass fail.
if the 2nd something is a noun, both ways are correct (ich bin berliner/ich bin ein berliner).
Indeed – ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ is proper German grammar, and therefore, ‘Du bist ein Fail.’
I don’t know where the doughnut legend spawned, but it’s completely untrue.
in many places in germany (not berlin) there is a doughnut that is frequently
referred to as a “Berliner”. of course, men from berlin also refer to themselves
as “Berliner.”
@TheLarrikin
Here’s a link to clear the confusion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5mu02xUgE4k
Me caring; FAIL
Epic fail:
When you identify yourself in German, you *never* use “ein”. In English, we need the article (as in, “I am _a_ teacher”). It’s not so in German.
The doughnut thing spawned, because that’s exactly what JFK said. “Ich bin ein Berliner” means “I am a jelly-filled doughnut”. “Ich bin Berliner” means “I hail from Berlin”.
Larrikin, you fail.
What the fuck could I have done without this edification.
Dude, in German you can well use “ein” when you identify yourself. Ich bin Lehrer. Ich bin ein Lehrer. Ich bin Münchener. Ich bin ein Münchener. Wie kannst’n du als “German speaker” sagen, dass man nie das Wort “ein” benutzt, wenn man von sich spricht?

If you have to be grammatically correct.
You’re enforcing grammaticals on a website that embraces broken english speak. U IZ DEH FAILZ.
thank god for someone who didn’t say first…
FIRST to say first and make you angry muhahahaha!!!
2nd Fail is that you spelt it wrong its Fail not Feil
You fail, it’s FEIL like HEIL HITLER you dumbass
Actually, “ei” in german is pronounced “aye”. Fail?
to be more precise “ei” in German is pronounced just like i, as in the word mine so feil would be pronounced like file
“aye” is pronounced just like “i”…
What a tool
Foda Se. Phuck You. Corrida Em Mim
What a fucking moron …
well it’s a navy base in san diego believe it or not google earth it
what is the fail here? It a symbol of fortune, or not? Take a look to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika .
Reclaim the symbols!!
Greetings from Berlin
I agree. And all these people failing at german.
And you are failing at English grammar.
And so are you (and I) for beginning a sentence with a conjunction.
It’s not grammatically incorrect to begin with a conjunction. That’s a myth they teach you in grade school, mostly so little kids don’t write compositions like, “And then we went to the park. And it was fun. And it was cool.” But it’s not incorrect.
ENOUGH!
Nice double negative. Correction fail.
Just because someone used a double negative doesn’t mean they’re wrong.
He was saying “it’s correct” otherwise known as “it’s not incorrect.”
Read the entire paragraph next time.

Well, you certainly don’t fail at explanations. Comment win! You just can’t f*%k with logic THAT good!
Ich sehe ein FAIL!!!!
wow bill german. 3rd and wtf nazi time is back?!? GET OUT THE PUMPGUNS!
the swastica, two sowilo’s interlocked, is the old germanic (by old i mean 10th century and earlier) symbol for the sun, and was meant to convey harmony and peace. It was never meant to be a symbol of hate.

Hey, that is bullshit. It’s all rumours and propganda. Try researching, not believing what you are told to.
Right, like believe what you just said… <_<
The swastika was actually found in caves that were suspected to originally have been homes to ancient Aryans. It then came to symbolize the Aryan race, and by extension, the Nazis.

You say that Judaism is a religion, not a race. Would the same not apply for Hewrew you idiot. You FAIL.
Actually, Hebrew is a language. It’s common knowledge. You FAIL, dumbass.
well then random chick failed too, she also said that Hebrew is a race
there they have hitler in criogenic state thats why nobody found him. also to elvis that he was secretly the hitler´s song and now he is also in criogenic state.
“Naval Amphibious Base Coronado”, san diego, california
my previous school was also built like that, but “unfortunately” they built only half of it
Stasi is back!
FAIL
Nazis and Stasi were complete different things.
I know but Stasi is really back.
history fail^^
nazi? where is it?
yups where is the fail place located
This symbol was originally a universal symbol of human harmony and peace.
So it is a FAIL in a Navy Base…
That’s only the case when the points are to the left, I believe. When they go to the right, it’s the nazi one.
U failed! they point at the “nazi” direction in the pic. If it would be in 45degree angle it would be perfect
Incorrect, both are used as good luck symbols in a few of teh more ancient religions. Just everyone suddenly saw all swastikas as evil when Hitler used it.
Nazi Base in San Diego
? US fail :p
Yeep! What’s with the swatchika? <<Sorry, I can’t spell right now, still waking up!
it would have been easier to correct yourself than comment.
Drink a nice cup of coffee. That should do the trick.
Of course, then you get hooked and have to drink more and more and more…
I know there is said to be a building that looks like a swastika somewhere in a US navy base (saw it at Google Earth, at least), but afaik, that was one _single_ building.
Am I really the only one who thinks this one looks damn photoshopped? Just look at the “roofs” of the buildings…

I agree, they do look like they are intentionally meant to look like planes.
But if they meant to bomb Germany, they were really off target.
Nope, it is on google earth, so its not photoshopped
This one’s actually real, it’s a navy base, I remember reading about it like, a few months ago.
It’s over on Snopes.com – it’s real.
found it on google earth: 32°40′33.33″N 117° 9′28.72″W
32°40′34.09″N, 117° 9′27.74″W
it IS on google earth, and if you scroll out and look lower and left you will see 2 other *shaped* buildings that represent allied bombers that are *aimed* at that one.
I just looked at all three sets of buildings together, and no way is this fail. Purely intentional architectural cartooning.
Wouldn’t it be awesome if more architects did stuff like this? Although I’m sure most idiots would just make a giant phallus or something…
ahhhh, Washington Monument?
That’s not a… damn, you’re right.
It’s a barrack on the Coronado Navy base, near San Diego. It was built 50 years ago and the architects knew it looked like a swastika (supposedly, it was a completely innocent mistake) but thought that nobody would ever see it from above for long enough to figure out what it looks like.
The only fail is all the tax dollars that were wasted to fix this because of people that bitch about a mistake…
It is real, I grew up in Coronado, Ca and have actually been inside that building. As has already been said it is on Naval Amphibious Base Coronado just across the bay from San Diego. It is a barracks building.
This is not funny at all. Failblog is starting to fail. The post with the leg being broken is also a nasty POS.
then go away.
You have some messed-up ideas on what is good and bad.
There is an easy fix Tiago. You know what I’m talking about.
Yeah, like squizan said – there’s only one option. Carve out your eyes with a spoon.
This is hilarious. But it’s a shame that that shape has such a negative connotation, because it really is a good building design otherwise.
Er, meant Feil…
I think somebody needs to invoke Godwin’s law on this.
Godwin’s law wins.
so so true
Incidentally, fail means wrong in Norwegian…
That’ll probably be where the word comes from. Remember, English is really messed up because of the amount of civilisations we were invaded by… Romans, the French, Norwegians (Vikings), Germans (Anglo-Saxons) etc., etc….
It’s really not a fail. As others have already mentioned, not only is the swatstika originally a symbol of fortune (which is why the nazis chose it), the design element is intentional, and this pic is cutting out other, vital info. It’s intentional misquoting in picture form.

I always wondered about that building, if it was built before the nineteen-thirties the swastika didn’t mean anything when it was designed.
L.O.L. @ “FEIL.”
I see 4 ‘L’ shaped building arranged in such a way that if you imagine something to be there that isn’t would look like a swatika.
You all have gestalt FAIL.
I see 4 separate ‘L’ shaped buildings.
You all have gestalt FAIL. Congratulations.
Not to mention that it’s actually a pretty, symmetrical design. So, interpretation FAIL, also.
I don’t get why people would be upset with it. It is a good design, the Swastika has been found as far back as the Neolithic period. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika.
Edjumication is a good thing and could prevent many a fail, or finding it where there really isn’t any.

Ok this blog is fail, as it transforms two consecutive apostrophes into a Unicode U+201D “quotation mark”.
will the true nazis please step up
shouldn’t it be “Seig Feil”??
Okay, so I have to ask…if this was built 50 years ago, that puts it shortly after WWII ended…did any of the German scientists who came over here under Project Paperclip ever work at this particular Navy base?

by correct i mean the swastika orientation symbolizing prosperity and happiness.
the worst fake picture I never seen
Yet another contender for the new Hitler Museum.
fuckin nazis!!!!!
There is a nursing home near my house that looks exactly like that from above.
It brings me great amusement.
My hometown of Decatur, Alabama is home to Wesley Acres, a retirement home, that looks just like a Swastika.
Wesley Acres is the sister building to the Naval Base Coronado in San Diego, which is shown in the above picture.
OMG
Hitler fail
just fail
@ above comments
Ignorance is indeed bliss. I won’t break the spell.
Lol! Didn’t anybody notice this on the blueprints?!?!
Yey, like Hamburger from Hamburg, Frankfurter from Frankfurt and Wiener (yes!) from Wien (Vienna in German).
The sister building to the above shown Naval Base Coronado in San Diego is in Decatur, Alabama.
It is a retirement home called Wesley Acres.

how is that a fail?
the fail is that they spelled fail wrong. feil???
umm.. i dont get it…
thats acctualy a holy symbol…thats why hitler made it ther nazi symbol cuz he was christian gone crazy and that symbol is a christian one…
