(a^.5 + b^.5)^.5 breaks down to a + (a*b)^.5 + b. In this case it’s 2 + (2*8)^.5 + 8 whis IS 18. The question is when things are squared that way, do they always make a rational number. The answer is, they do not. Only when ‘a’ times ‘b’ is a perfect square.

There are many math answers to the question, including:
consider the sqrt(2)+sqrt(3); when you square that irrational number,
you get 2+2*sqrt(6)+3 = 5+2*sqrt(6) which is still irrational.
A little knowledge of (a+b)squared = (a)squared+2ab+(b)squared
plus testing a few cases would have provided a quick contradiction
to the rational/irrational hypothesis. It’s not a hard math
question for a high school algebra test.

The point of the joke is not making fun of Tracy. It is to make
fun of the sexist loser who was so lost he could not even
try to answer the question and probably missed so many more
questions that he had given up on trying to get the answers
and was just trying to relieve his frustration by giving
snide answers.

because the problem is (√2 +√8)² which breaks down to √2² + √8² which now cancles out the square root and squares making it 2+8 which equals 10 which is the right answer not 18. I just thought somebody outa put the math on here
