Yup, that would be why traicee referenced type 2 (acquired), the form that is caused by developing an insensitivity to insulin later in life. And yes, the risk for this increases proportionally with the amount of adipose tissue that you carry. Type 1 would be genetic lottery fail and a pretty common misunderstanding – the likelihood of inheriting this is less than 10% even if your parent has it. Most likely due to early childhood viral infections.

I’m from Roanoke and can attest to the fact that that photo did actually run in the local paper. Sad point of fact, that’s not an uncommon thing to see in the rural south.
Happens in big cities up north, too. Had a coworker in Chicago who would get upset, for fear of second hand smoke harming her babies, about walking through the pack of smokers huddled around the front door of our building … but would step out onto the fire escape for a puff every chance she got. Would also come into work almost every Monday with stories about the drunken festivities she and her husband had participated in over the weekend. Both kids are now in special ed. Big surprise.

This is why I think there should be a licence/test to become a parent. You need: A modicum of intelligence (which this woman fails at), and the ability to care for the child emotionally and physically.

Sweden is a very good example of a “developed country”. There are no poor people on the level of poverty you find in like Africa or America. And the industries are really clean and do not pollute as much as like Chernobyl or America. No child prostitution like in Thailand or America (sorry Thailand…..I know Americas rate of child prostitution is higher even with population taken into account). They don’t have illeagal concentration camps like former nazi German and America. People don’t get shot in the streets like in Irak and America. Its a democracy where you get to choose which (out of many options) party to lead the country…and then that party works for the people, unlike dictatorships like North Korea and America.
Having said that I have absolutely nothing against Americans, actually many of my absolutely most loved friends are Americans. It’s not the fault of the North Korean people what Kim Jong Ill is doing. The same goes for America.

seriously? now, don’t get me wrong, i don’t condone smoking at all, and i certainly don’t like to see a pregnant woman smoking, but i’m pretty sure that plenty of babies of smokers have been born just fine – yes, low birth weight is highly likely, and yes other problems certainly can develop and are more likely to do so with a heavy smoker, but overreact much?
i can’t be outraged? i thought that’s what these forum-like comment strings were for…..commenting how you feel about it. i just wanted to know if the kid is ok. because not only does smoking increase the chances of low birth weight, but also the chances of miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, underdevelopment, and later on sids, allergies, and intellectual impairment. i’m not saying there’s no chance the kid can’t be healthy, but when talking about a child i think any increase in the chance any of that crap could happen is too big an increase, too much of a risk. i’m sorry if my apparent over-reaction has offended you, obviously smoking is a sore subject for me. especially since the kid has no choice but to be taking it in.

I support your concern. My mom’s a smoker, and I was born 6 weeks early, weighing 2 lbs, 15 oz. I was in an incubator for 2 months and suffered from severe athsma for 12 years, and allergies to this day. I’m pretty much okay now but my chance for a normal life was low enough that my mom was given the option to not have me. (She had 2 miscarriages before me, as well).
The worst is that the date for this is only 2004, instead of 1985. There’s even less of an excuse for this kind of irresponsibility.

They were my local paper growing up, and I was an hour from Roanoke itself, and I know they stretched further than that. Roanoke is the only big city in that area, though Blacksburg is growing now.

Geography fail! Roanoke Island is in North Carlina … this is Roanoke Virginia. The picture sadly is real and unaltered. I remember seeing it in the local paper and about peeing myself because I was laughing so hard. necessarily when it’s actually *doing* so).
There’s a book called “Freakonomics”, where (among other things) the authors

No that is not what they really do. Most of the time abortions are done through a series of pills which induce a miscarriage. The rest of the time (later in the pregnancy during the 2nd trimester) they go in and physically remove the fetus as a whole. Most places (even planned parenthood) will not remove a fetus after a woman has entered the 3rd trimester (6-9 months). The whole partial-birth abortion thing that gets everyone so hyped up only happened once or twice under very odd circumstances a long time ago and is already universally banned in the US.

Within the last couple years AZ enacted a no public smoking law. The call center I worked at then, in order to comply with the law, had to move smoking areas X ft away from the entrance. They went a little overboard and put two smoking areas almost as far from the building as possible on opposite sides. All the smokers were bitching about it. I thought I had heard every complaint then one day I overhear in the break room: “I can’t beleave they moved the smoking areas so far. I can’t be walking that far, I’m pregnant.” I almost choked and just had to walk away.

I’ve also heard smokers that got knocked up say things like “My doctor says just quitting smoking is actually bad for the baby” Must be the same doctor the tobacco industry gets to say that smoking doesn’t give people cancer.

After reading all of these enlightened comments I think the only reasonable approach to dealing with this individual is building a bona fide concentration camp (such as those found in the Hitler regime) and making ‘it’ live there. Those camps had excellent and highly refined methods of handling superfluous humans, some of the same methods mentioned here.
And, then, of course, ‘it’ could be exterminated if extreme levels of torture, abuse, torment, depravity, persecution, and debasement failed to achieve the proper rehabilitative outcome.
