This is not a “fail”, this is a horrible accident. The fail blog is for fun, and there is nothing funny about a pack of cyclists being wiped out by a drunk driver, especially when one was killed and others seriously injured- the “fail” is yours for making a joke of this.
Yeah it was a horrible accident but dont click on controversial links then be surprised you see something unsettling. It was clearly your choice to look, knowing you were about to see something bad. You fail as an internet user

In an RSS reader, there is no such linked warning.
I’m filing this picture away for the next time I’m stuck behind some asshole hipster on a bicycle pretending like he’s doing something other than just generally being in the way.
It’ll be good for a giggle.
As for you people, get over it. Everyone who dies is someone’s family member, and sometimes we like to look at pictures of them dying and laugh.
It’s nothing compared to what will happen to them at the funeral home. See, it turns out you need a special license to clean out the cremation ovens and it’s not really a facet of that industry that the general populace is hip to. So my buddy’s dad aquired this permit to cart away all the grisle and soot and what not from all of the funeral homes in the county and we did this the summer before senior year, working for him.
You know how when you work food service and you see what the kitchen is like, that veil of mystery is lifted and you lose your appetite for whatever they’re cooking? Well putting in time with these freaks who preserve and dress the bodies, it became apparent that there was at least one guy at every place we went that was fucking the corpses. It’s a practically victimless crime and that type of work attracts people who are sick in that way – the whole industry pretty much looks the other way.
Moral of the story, I can pretty much garantee that young, athletic butt hole took a hard pounding or two after they stitched him back together. And also anyone you’ve ever loved that has died in this country.

As someone who makes a living surfing the web, I feel comfortable saying that this was properly dealt with as a controversial link. And it definitely qualifies as an Epic Fail. Which makes me wonder what to call the recent nearby incident where a cop did the same thing – fell asleep and plowed through three cyclists going the other way on a winding road.
As a new cyclist, I appreciate this as a warning to never let my guard down. There’s assholes out there (specifically cautionary is the fact that, in MEXICO, the drunk guy plowing into a bike race was an AMERICAN) who will somehow not notice you.
Anyway, Fail pics are always a mix of humor and morbidness, and this simply defines one extreme.

I have ridden bicycles for 17 years, raced for 13, and I have lost a few friends and fellow cyclists to incidents like that along the way. So let me say this, that picture was not a picture of a true “accident,” where no one is at fault, and not all fails have to be funny, cute, or pretty. That picture was as fail as it gets. Driver fail. And I can only imagine what will be-fail the dude when he ends up in Mexican prison.

It’s sad that someone actually died in this accident.
But that doesn’t mean that the driver isn’t made of drunk and FAIL. It’s not funny, but it is still FAIL.
But the point of this isn’t to show people that simply fail. A test with a low score wouldn’t be worthy of this blog, even though there is failure involved. A normal college acceptance letter wouldn’t be worthy of fail.
The point is humor, and there is no humor present here. It is not funny that a group of cyclists were hit by someone who was impaired while driving.

In the case of people who get injured in failboats, they aren’t dying, and often they’re the person who made the mistake, or from the same company as the person who made the mistake.
The person who failed in this one didn’t pay the price. Someone died. Injury and death are very different.

How do you know no one died in any of the fails? Can you be certain that no deaths resulted from a failboat? Do you follow up the story behind every picture posted on this site to ensure that every single accident was one caused by the person who failed?
Unless the failblog has gone through and weeded out some of the older pictures, not all of the pictures on failblog are funny. Some are disturbing, some are disgusting and a great majority are flat-out tasteless.
I didn’t find this picture particularly funny, as it looked like a serious accident. However, I’d be disappointed if failblog backed down from a picture like this, because this is a massive failure.
Wow, im sure that the thought of people who crash in a boat and end up dying will some how be comforted that they didnt actualy die. Hitting water at speeds achieved in power boats could be akin to hitting concrete, but if your sure then you go with that.

You’re missing the point. The image isn’t saying that the bikers are failing, as they are clearly doing nothing wrong. It’s showing the drunk driver failing at driving. I don’t think it’s inappropriate to show this image because its empowering the victims by highlighting the fail of the aggressor. here’s my vote for “not funny”. posting this wasn’t evil or edgy, just immature.
Yes, but this “community feedback” is calling for the removal of this picture. If that happens, that’s cencorship. This is a blog where the community is able to post what they like. Everyone has the same voice here. Your opinion about how that voice is used is yours, and you are always entitled to voice yours just as freely as they are theirs. removing one post and not another is the only wrong that can be done here.
It’s someone’s personal blog. How can removing a post be censorship when it’s not some other authority (webhost, government) doing it?
If you remove a post from your own blog, it might be *self* censorship, but it’s not really censorship.
I disagree that this blog is personal when the content is provided by the public.
An editor chooses what makes the cut. He chooses something that makes the cut, then removes it. Still a personal blog.
The definition of censorship in the U.S. is:
“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
Taking down the picture in the community is not by the government; therefore it’s not censored — it’s following the community’s wishes.
The legal definition of censorship and the dictionary definition of censorship are very different beasts. If I choose to withhold my opinion on a given topic, it is self-censorship, but censorship nonetheless.
Do I think the image is in poor taste? Yes.
Would I have posted it myself? No.
Would I remove the image, once posted, had I the power to do so? No.
I believe that any form of external censorship is wrong. The creators/editors of this site chose to post something controversial. If people don’t like it or don’t want to see that sort of thing, they are free to create their own publications; easier than ever in today’s world.
oh yes, THAT’s why we come here. so we can get ideas of how to make our OWN publications. because we have nothing better to with our time. get a grip – some of us come here for some comic relief in our otherwise-stressful lives.
Oh, and BTW… if you say or do something without thinking it through very well, and your friends point out that it hurt their feelings or otherwise was “not cool,” apologizing (some call it “taking it back”) would be good sense, not censorship.
Oh, and congrats for falling onto the bandwagon of “all censorship is bad.” Who told you that? Your favorite emo band? Self-censorship = good social skills. The censorship that we are talking about in those anti-censorship rants… is when a higher authority censors someone under their rule. If YOUR post were removed without your authority, THAT is censorship. It’s also called moderating. I don’t know if you’ve realized it, but un-moderated public forums are an annoying waste of time and space.

The definition of censorship doesn’t change based on the country, censorship is still censorship, it’s just whether (and to what degree) it’s legal. All you stated was the first amendment, which, by the way…is not a definition…it’s a constutional amendment.

That is the first amendment. The first amendment =/= censorship. The two are related, but censorship is the act of blocking some or all content from public view. To call for the removal of the post would be an act of censorship.

I agree with Sensible. There’s posts on here of boats crashing into houses or bridges, or pictures of car accidents. You think people didn’t get hurt or killed in THOSE? Taking personal offense to something is a subjective experience. Everyone has the right to that experience, but what I don’t think they have the right to is asking somebody to take back something like this. Where do you draw the line? “OK, this is offensive, but that is not.” Great. What about me? What about that guy? What about the guy who hasn’t even entered the situation yet?
Be offended if you must, but leave it at that and move on.

we all need to laugh at the accidents of others whether someone is hurt, killed or just fine. If we couldn’t laugh at misery of others we would never laugh again. Need I remind people of America’s funniest videos? Jackass? outrageous moments caught on tape? How many were hurt with those? And we just sat there and laughed at them. Maybe a good laugh will help people recover faster.

I’m a biker and I’ve had my share of close scrapes with cars, so this picture is actually pretty terrifying to me. That being said, this is one of the most hilarious fails I’ve ever seen and I even was one of the submitters of this as soon as I read the story. I don’t agree, though, that the Fail is on the shoulders of the bikers, as is implied by the caption, but rather the Fail is by the driver of the car.
Responsibility Fail or Sober Fail, is more like it.

Have you watched “Achmed the Dead Terrorist” ? To my mind it’s funny as hell. Some people, probably mostly families of 9/11’s victims, won’t find it funny at all.
So, the context of this pic can shock some people, and it’s understandable. The grotesque of the situation can surprise some other and provoke hilarity, and it’s understandable, some people have a darker sense of humor.
And then there are the hypocrites that laugh at the failboat because they don’t know if there are casualties.

It was amusing to see so many get hit, but the silent laughter died when I realised this picture shows how one person died.

I’m not disgusted by the pic as much as I’m saddened by it. It is the ultimate fail–the actions of one resulting in the death and injuries of others. But to answer your question, do I spend my dating the world I live in? Yes. Absolutely. The older I get and the more I know, the more I’ve come to despise the human race–and not just the people who commit the large atrocities, but also the people who judge them while committing small atrocities of their own.
But that’s just me.
Yes. This world DOES indeed allow for some sad and horrible things. They will be put in our faces once in a while. If all we can do is cry about how we don’t want to see, though we know it has happened, isn’t that more or less just escapism? Running away from the truth because you can’t handle that the world isn’t sugary sweet, that everything will not go perfectly well all the time? In my opinion, this picture is a magnificent fail. Because it IS the penultimate fail. It’s so fail that someone even got killed because the failer was a fucking idiot. It’s bordering on being too fail, but what it truly shows is in the comments. It shows that people suffer from a complex about saving the entire world. It cannot be done. Care for those next to you, care for those you can reach. Most likely none of us knew this Alessandro guy personally. For those who do, all of this obviously doesn’t apply to you.
We somehow care and empathise for the people who got run over… and while getting run over IS bad, the point is that we don’t know these people, we would have never heard of them unless they died, and if I have to worry about every single death that I know occurs, then I’ll be worrying myself to death. Africa and starvation anyone? Therefore, the two main choices, not giving a damn, and worrying, are both relatively bad. If you don’t give a damn whatsoever, then you’re just an insensitive prick, yes.
I do give a damn, but in the face of adversity, there’s only one thing to do. Laugh at it. Life is ridiculous, life is lame sometimes, but laugh at it and move on.
Frankly, I don’t find any of the failboat/bridge things funny. I didn’t find the “kneefail” funny, just amazing/painful.

1) the internet is full of things that you may find offensive, get over it, there was a warning – if your RSS reader didn’t give you that option mod it so it does
2) Some people may find it funny, get over it, it just maybe their way of dealing with such issues. Just because its not your way of standing on your soap box screaming ‘ban this sick filth’ doesn’t mean it should be banned.
3) I think someone mentioned the feelings of the families involved; I bet when those photos were published in the newspaper and on the news, I’m sure the royalties helped a hell of a lot in paying the fucked up american health care system for treatment.
4) The people in the photo accepted the dangers of cycling on a road and all this blog is doing is showing what happened. ‘Oh thats the place for the news’ I hear you cry, well the news likes money, and amazing stories and will add a tint and a twist to this accident – I think I have gone on a tangent……
In short – get over it, its the internet, if you want nice flowers, sunshine and happy things from nursery – go back to nursery or get off the web, simple, the internet is the last haven of free speech, and I’ll be damned if you pussy’s start saying what is appropriate or not; go chew on some politically correct crayons.
I think the most interesting part of this discussion is that nobody has questioned the integrity of the photographer or the newspapers or the blogs that are profiting off the original photo. There are a couple of people who admit in their comments how they saw the photo in other publications and that’s why they know the context…
So what these commenters are saying is it’s okay to point and gawk, but as soon as you snicker you’re an evil bastard that should be tar and feathered.
I remember when there were editorial boards who wouldn’t print photos like this – I think they called it sensationalism and viewed it as an unethical practice. Now the same publications claw at each other to see who can pay the most so they can cash in on the IRL circulation or internet traffic produced by these images.
FailBlog’s main function is to post user-submitted photos of fail – this happens to be the most highly user-submitted photo in the history of the site’s existence – and everyone is demonizing FailBlog for it?
This site pales in comparison, both by circulation and profit, to the original propagaters of this photo! Where’s the indignation over that?

Essentially, yes.
While it may be sensationalist, widespread publication of this picture in the proper context may actually save lives if it reminds a single person not to drive when drunk or without enough sleep. Pointing and gawking is insensitive to those involved, but in the larger scheme of things it helps people to remember this photo next time they consider driving while drunk. Laughing at it shows that you’ve failed to internalize the lesson that can be learned here and brushed it off as somehow inapplicable to your own life.
At the same time, I have to agree that we can’t demonize Failblog for publishing the most-submitted photo yet. We should instead take a closer look at ourselves.
Although I am still wiping the tears out of my eyes regarding the hiroshima fail etc. I must concur with GomerPhyls.
If you’re blaming someone, blame the photographer. The action journalism is leading to the fact that our perception of what is funny and what is not going down the drain. Our senses are being castrated and sites like rotten.com are really burning down moral.
There is no doubt about this whole situation being tragic. And I must admit that that was my initial thought was the same. Even now I can’t really laugh about the picture. Yet I would not go as far as requesting a removal because humans are, in the end, individuals. As is their individual perception of humor.
The link which has now been added is a good compromise between free media on the internet and a disclaimer stating that what you are going to see may turn out to be touching and can’t be handled by everyone.

There are a lot of fails like this. There are sites where you can see people who have died in very stupid ways, but it is usually suicide or accidental death. Once you get used to the death factor, some of them are really interesting. There is a fairly common sex act where men hang themselves while mastrubating and have a life ending orgasm. In many cases they are dressed as women and high on drugs. This often results in death. While funny and a fail, it should not be posted here because that’s not what the intent of this site is. There are already sites that do “darwin award” death scenes. One i felt really badly for was Nicole Catsouras, do not look up her name if you are squeamish. She stole her dad’s car and flipped it at 210 KPH right into a concrete barrier. While definitely a fail, the accident pictures are the most disgusting thing on the internet. For the record, i work at a location where i see dead bodies fairly regularly so i am accustomed to seeing them.
What it boils down to is what direction do you want failblog to go in? This is a controversy that you had to run into sooner or later.
There is another website that handles this sort of “fail” and perhaps it would be better to leave the fatalities to them. It’s not really about free speech, it’s about seperation of media into “extreme” and more “general content”. People shouldn’t be exposed to stuff they aren’t expecting, and vehicular homicide is a first for failblog.

Humour IS kinda relative. A rascist joke isn’t funny to minorities. Borat isn’t funny to his victims and Kazakhstanis. This picture isn’t funny to death-sensitive people. It makes sense that a lot of pictures here on Failblog isn’t funny to some people.
But it just so happens that a lot of people who commented here are death-sensitive.

Does no one really think about the fact that many of the actions photographed on this site could have resulted in death? All we are seeing is the before picture, not the after. I agree with “InsertNameHere”, why unsubscribe because of one post? On the other hand, if Failblog knew it was going to be controversial (and it is pretty unsettling), why post it in the first place? Just because it was “the most submitted” doesn’t mean it should have been posted. That’s the discretion of the people who run the site, but a little more common sense may be necessary.
A lot of it is because we know that someone died. In all the other pics we have the luxury of not knowing.
In my opinion this picture is in the right place. There are other pictures of tragic events on this site, the boat that crashes in a bridge and goes on fire afterwards for example. Its the circumstances that makes it funny, considering consequence is not part of the amusement. And even if, laughing isn’t the worst way to deal with tragedy. The anthropological roots of laughing at someone, by the way, are a ritual of excluding and separating an individual from the group. Now that doesn’t seem very nice, does it? Also Freud’s analysis of the “joke” is that it brings out what we really think, but because of social conventions we hide it behind the pretense of humor. So, making fun of someone is never harmless. Its often cruel. Thats the concept of Schadenfreude. But there is no reason why we shouldn’t enjoy it. Moral boundaries for jokes are hypocritical and by itself obsolete.

Ok, I bike 15 miles a day to work and back, everyday … through heavy traffic etc. The first thing that came to my mind was “How the HELL did they NOT see a car coming straight at them?”. I often find a difference between “cyclists” and “bike commuters”. Cyclists tend to go where they want, when they want, through stop signs and red lights (I yell at them)… and apparently they also go straight into cars in front of them (FAIL). A bicyclist who is not aware of their surroundings is guaranteed to get into a fatal accident eventually, either by a driver blinded by the sun, playing with their stereo, talking on their cellphone, drunk, etc… or the cyclist will be too busy peddling and go straight off a cliff. Seriously, were these guys blind? This is a tragic FAIL of the greatest magnitude… and this isn’t “murder”, I would confidently assume the driver did NOT intend or plan on hitting them. **Notice in the picture one cyclist pulled to the side of the road, and another was about half way there… Safety FIRST, ALWAYS! Its not worth the damned “medal” in a race if you get KILLED!

The photographer who took this horrific picture was wrong to send it to all the news organizations that gladly took and published it (for the sake of sensationalism). But that’s his personal moral failure, which he’ll have to wrestle with himself.
I don’t think Failblog should take this down, because the discussion an interesting exploration into the sort of human being that populates this place.
Those who actually find this hilarious are having an EMPATHY FAIL. You are failing to place yourself in others’ shoes. If your reaction involved only mirth and no sense of the pain or upset of others–and, contrary to what some of the previous posters have said, it doesn’t matter if they are distant to you–then you have damaged or desensitized your ability to empathize.
I don’t that it’s entirely wrong to have this photo here, since there is a MAJOR failure here–that of the drunk driver. While there is somewhat of an “awesome factor” involved in the photo, the caption perhaps is misconstrued–perhaps it should be something like “CARING ABOUT OTHERS FAIL” or “HUMANITY FAIL”. Or just with a more straightforward approach, since people have judged the photo redeemable if it convinces people not to drink and drive…

I can’t believe all this arguing over a photograph. One of the cool parts about being human is that we are all living under our own ‘perception’ of reality. Whether you LOL’d or were outraged, you felt exactly as YOU were meant to feel about it.

My dad was killed by a drunk driver and i still laughed at this pic, it’s a good example at how dumb people can be and you don’t have to get so mad about it.
Its not funny when anyone gets hurt. You think this is the ONLY photo/video showing death? Go back and looks at some of the things posted on here…. most of this stuff is horrible bad but yet we still laugh at it. Who are all of you to draw the line at where the laughter starts and stops? I agree with the first post, but we should be able lo find a picture funny without letting it affect how we value human life. I mean yeah I feel terrible for the family, I know my family would be devastated if something like that happened to one of us. However, we should all be able to laugh because it looks really funny. Oh and I have my own version of drunk driving rehab: Desert Eagle round through the temple. It’s 100% proven effective! WIN!

I love how this country works. We are governed by a constitution that affords us the right to freedom of speech and freedom of the press, but yet everyone is over sensitive about things they see or hear. Just because you don’t agree with something, doesn’t mean its wrong. Its a picture, nowhere in the caption did it say, hey look at this death, laugh at it.
