I've seen cats do this before - from a distance it looks cute "Aww, kittie is playing nice with the mouse!" but up close you see kittie is actually performing a science experiment, watching its movement and seeing how much damage is required to kill it. My cat on the other hand is literally afraid of birds. She WILL NOT go outside when there's birds flying around.
