Close captioning goofs like this are rather common, actually. Just turn on any newscast and switch on the closed captioning on your remote and watch for a few minutes.

I remember in English class a long time ago reading in a Shakespeare play “he ejaculated”, meaning “called out/yelled”, but of course being an American 17 year old at the time I couldn’t help but giggle at the sophomoric double entendre….

I happen to be deaf and I also happen to be exposed to the techniques used in captioning. They use stenographers and some mechanism in which usage of keys or combinations of keys represent sounds people make, which are combined into words. People’s names sometimes appear as other words, for example, but this fail pic is a pretty lulzy example.

This reminds me of an epic closed captioning fail I saw. It was a Ford truck commercial and the captioning read as follows:

“It’s like grabbing your penis, which every man does every once in a while. Get ready for some lactating goodness!”

And I was all, “O_________O”. It was a local channel, I have no clue how that happened.

Live closed captioning is done by computer voice recognition. “Evacuating” sounds like “ejaculating”, especially if mumbled, low volume, other noises, radio phone-in, etc.

Or plain old stupidity on the part of the recognition software, which is not perfect.
