  1. Tara says:

That has SO happened to me. more than once. thats why i gave it up

    • grumbada says:

Me TOO!!! God, I hated that! :(

      • Anonymous says:

your dumb the way they programmed it is that the bomb will never be next to a wall in that scenario

        • Louis says:

Never be next to a wall ?
But theres loads of bombs that are next to walls in that game…

And even in that scenario a bomb has to be next to a wall because theres 2 left and they are both touching a wall.

          But yeah FAILED !
Although it was probably done on purpose as that last one was obvious where the bomb was. :P

          • Anonymous says:

            Obvious where the bomb was?
            Look again.
Could have been either of the last two.
            50/50 chance.

            • Jesus says:

Nope, it’s obvious the location! it was done on purpose

              • kaz says:

that is so not… read the hits idiot it could have been both squares.

                • Mark says:

I agree, it could have been a fifty/fifty chance. I would have picked the same one. I mean, there’s three touching the square with the three on it and one with the one on it. So kaz is right, it could have been either.

                  • Mr Ninja says:

You’re both wrong. Yes, there was a 50/50 chance, but I’m yet to see a min in the corner…

                    • C says:

                      50-50

and yes i’ve encountered mines in the corners plenty of times

                    • Kevin says:

Theres a mine in the corner… in the top left corner… in fact it’s almost the exact same setup as the lower right, except with the other mine.

                    • adam says:

Wow, have none of you ever played minesweeper before?
The fail here was getting as close to the end of Expert as you can without actually winning, and having a 50/50 guess, and getting it wrong… And god, that must kill.

              • Sten Darker says:

What are you talking about!? that’s not obvious at all! if it was, then prove it. what trick, or rule makes it obvous!

                • someguy3657 says:

the higher the score, the closer it is to a bomb.
beside the bomb was a 3.
beside the safe block was a 1.
                  how obvious can it get?

                  • DUDE says:

Yeah. The number means how many of the adjacent tiles have a
                    bomb in them.
                    You fail at understanding minesweeper.

                    • Sten Darker says:

                      Absolutely correct DUDE!

It says in the Help Topics section for my old 98 (I’m using a laptop to type this down)
under “Playing the game” (which i jsut lost by the way!)
                      3rd Bullet down…
                      and I quote

“If a number appears on a square, it indicates how many mines are in the eight squares that surround the numbered one.”

                  • Buzz Killington says:

                    No. Just No.

The Score represents how many bombs are touching the square. 3 means 3 bombs touching. You’ve found 2. There is one left. The One means there is ONE bomb touching it. You’ve found none. 50/50 Chance.

                    Fail.

              • mci says:

*** Nope, it’s obvious the location! it was done on purpose ****

                You. Are. A. Moron.

                • Idiot-Hunter says:

You’re a complete moron, have you ever used your brain?
BTW can’t you take a picture of yourself and send it in to Failblog?
That would be a great Fail-picture

                  Thank You

                • Buzz Killington says:

No. I’m guessing you fail at minesweeper. 50/50 chance. Nothing else. No way of knowing.

And. You. Sir. Are. A. Total. Moron. Slash. Hypocrite.

                • timmaaa says:

geez iv never once played minesweeper n even i can understand that it was obvious where fukin bomb was…..

                  • 50-50 says:

then maybe you should play minesweeper so you could understand

until then you are Fail for making that comment

                  • Ryan says:

Yes, since you haven’t played minesweeper you clearly don’t understand the rules. A connect diagonally with the 1 qualifies as adjacent and is just as common as otherwise.

It should also be noted that only the Expert level of minesweeper puts you into these guessing situations, which is why I don’t play it. If it can’t be solved logically, then whats the point of the game? Then, it’s just gambling with no money.

            • starponys says:

do u play this game at all????

          • Smart guy says:

if you take another careful look it could have been on both sides

            -smart guy

        • laura says:

well thats a wrong for a start the game generally has the bomb on the wall and in corners everyone ion my family takes out the corners first and sometimes it works on sometimes itr doesn’t the game is not progammed to be easy now is it

        • Hank says:

          “you’re” dumb

        • PONU says:

Really? I find that to happen all that time

        • anonymous says:

fail explanation fail on your part – Louis is right and you just made yourself look like a jackass.

    • potter says:

You all fail!!! You’re all arguing over something STUPID!! It’s just a picture!

  2. Omega II says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. Anonymous says:

    ГЫЫЫЫ ))))

  4. mdma luva says:

    lol

  5. Oh man does that look familiar!! You also have decisions like that to win the expert level. It took me FOREVER to finally beat it!

  6. [...] lo que tiene, te pegas 1 hora jugando una partida al Buscaminas y ¡¡zas!! en el último movimiento [...]

    • ??? says:

      Speak English!!!!!

    • WingedDemon says:

For people who want to complain about the fact that the person commented in Spanish other than English instead of, say, trying to translate, they basically said, “You spend an hour playing one game of Minesweeper, and you lose on the final move.” There’s a bit more to it than that, but that’s the gist of it.

      • JJtoob says:

Yup pretty much. More litterally (and with grammar errors and stuff): “what it has, you stuck 1 hour playing a game of minesweeper and BOOM in the last move…”

  7. Ohno says:

    Oh so close!

  8. bloggersiva says:

most of you always sharing the fucking process, what the hell do you experience in that sin…….

  9. That would be awful end for real life minesweeper…

  10. Dakker says:

That’s pretty much the opposite of when I play MS.

  11. FXSmom says:

I have had that happen too. It’s f-ing sucks!!!

  12. mj says:

There’s nothing you can do here… it’s just a coinflip, not really a fail. It sucks but that’s part of the game. It would have been a FAIL if they missed a trivial click at the very end. Haven’t played Minesweeper in ages but I have gone under 100 seconds for expert several times.

    • i'm in awe says:

uner 100 seconds? you legend. i’m so glad you shared that with us. really, you should be congratulated by everyone you know. i once tied my shoes in 18 seconds. awesomeness.

  13. Fernando Sandoval says:

    jeje me ha pasado tambien

  14. ninjadoom says:

It’s moments like this that make one want to rip their hair out, throw their computer against a wall, [multiple times] and maybe hurt a few individuals…. Then hope that your PC is okay so that you can play again and DOMINATE!

    lollerskates.
    x

  15. MistressOfEternity says:

I’d hate that a lot; a pity I can’t even beat Novice for Minesweeper. It’s just too hard. Heh.
    -MoE

  16. auntyherohag says:

    that sucks.

  17. egads…that’s happened to me!

  18. I miss my old HP 386.

  19. jos says:

lol i took screencaps everytime that happened to me as well..

  20. big laughs says:

    bummer…

  21. Ouch! Punch in the stomach!

  22. LTC says:

What the hell are you all talking about?
    Its NOT a coinflip,
    It IT a trivial miss

ffs, theres a one with a mine already tagged right next to the block that was clicked…

    • Abyss Fire says:

Guess what? That one next to the un-clicked block means it could very well be either of those squares.
      Coin-flip for sure.

      • starponys says:

again do u play this game at all notice the big 3 if thats beside it DONT CLICK THERE

        • Sten Darker says:

you forget, the 3 is also touching the other one… so… yeah, they go diagnal as well If I remember correctly. bummer… not a fail.

        • mci says:

Moron, either of the squares could have accounted for that “3.”

          What an imbecile.

        • Sten Darker says:

this makes me wonder if there were different versions of minesweeper.

It seems people dissagree at what the numbers mean.

As explained above by DUDE, the numbers SHOULD mean how many ADJACENT squares have a mine in them.

the three was in contact with BOTH squares, and therefore there was an EQUAL chance for either of them to have a mine.

The one next to the blank square was also in contact with the mine AND the blank square.

          A complete coin flip.

  23. LTC says:

    or not, crap. :x

  24. LP says:

    True story.

  25. Someone says:

    Weird.

  26. Luquos says:

    Ouch, man.

I love the coloured ‘FAIL’ at the bottom. Beautiful touch.

  27. Failz says:

Love the “Fail”… but wait! it’s Photoshopped!

there’s actually a cheat for mine sweeper to see if a spot holds a mine or not… just read about it on maximum pc

  28. Sascha says:

    Oh my good, thats suck!!!

  29. stevendraper says:

So many hours spent with that blasted game, and yes I’ve had that too.

Getting away from that blasted game was one reason I bought a mac!!!!!!

  30. Steve Bartman says:

It’s like being a Cubs fan, being 5 outs from the World Series, and then having it all fall apart.

  31. charli says:

It’s nice to know someone else has been there, too.

  32. zeniamai says:

That must’ve hurt… So close yet so far…

  33. Commando says:

    That must SUCK!

  34. Mom says:

I can’t even remember how many times I’ve had that same FAIL.

I don’t play Minesweeper anymore. It’s just too painful.

    http://www.momstop.blogspot.com

  35. John says:

    Always do the corners first!

  36. Ruby Moon says:

and that ladies and gentlemen is why you should get a vista…
it has a “SAVE” function for minesweeper

    *evil laughter*

    • Sten Darker says:

cool. the one actually usefull upside to ugrading.

(by the way, the mojave commercial, has an updated version of vista where they fixed all the problems I don’t mind mojave, but the mojave commercials just a load of crap)

    • Ron says:

yeah i want a vista for the save function on mine sweeper and for everything else to not work.

      FAIL

  37. Keith Ferguson says:

mj #14, you are smoking crack if you think that ANYONE thinks you have beat EXPERT less than 100….. BULLSHIT!!!
I just got 236 and that has taken 5 years of practice….and as for fail …OH WELL, I can’t count the times that has happened to me…..

  38. Mom says:

#41 – You must not be very good if it took you 5 years to get 236 on the expert level. I’ve gotten under 100 several times, too. And I’ve never gone over 200 unless I was distracted by something like a small person who required immediate attention.

    http://www.momstop.blogspot.com

  39. Keith Ferguson says:

momstop#42…..I also forgot to say and a lot of luck…..that’s a move a second….and in this case less than… it would require an extreme number of “OPEN’S” which we all know is PURE LUCK NO SKILL….OK… with that said,
I take my hat off to you for being LUCKY….HOWEVER….WE both know it takes skill and knowledge of there “LITTLE TRICKS”… please….rsvp and tell me some tricks.

  40. Keith Ferguson says:

their not there……. opps, sorry momstop.

  41. Keith Ferguson says:

momstop and mj….how many “SQUARES” ya’ll playing? mine is 480for expert, 256 for intermrdiate and 81 for beginner.

I have: 10 secs for beginner
    95 for INT.
236 for expert….care to share yours?

    RSVP

  42. gwo says:

    you’re just crap keith

world record for expert is under 40 seconds.

    I’m at 67 seconds myself.

  43. NYMIKE says:

My best score is 96, I have done under 100 4 times, most of my scores are in the 120 range. To Keith if you think 100 is impossible check out this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsDqS-6HPKQ. By the way to get better at expert you need to beat lots ad lots of intermediates and beginners since those teach you speed, while expert is a marathon.

  44. Keith Ferguson says:

    thats 7.16 squares per second….that aint happening…..

  45. Keith Ferguson says:

OH I GET IT…..I guess if I cheated or had help I could do it too…..WOW……I beat 150 today I guess I’m on my way to 8 seconds for 480 squares….

  46. amishblah says:

uh, you all claiming that it’s impossible to break a hundred on expert need to practice more. I’ve managed to pop 75 seconds one time, but that was pure luck. I generally hit in the 110-120 range. At that point it’s a lot of pattern recognition and a little luck for those situations like in the original.

@48, you do realize that when you click a blank square it opens up all the surrounding squares until it’s boxed in.

  47. chufla says:

    WINNER!!

  48. sassmo says:

I can totally sympathize with this… Had that happen to me way too many times.

    Keith:
My best score on beginner is 6 seconds. When I used to play, I averaged about 120 on expert. It’s all about the left-right mouse combo click, which is not a cheat. If you hit the right blocks, it automatically opens all the available blocks.

  49. bob says:

    oooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo man thats a bummer.

    FTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

that sucks balls man. hope the guy got over it and didnt kill any1 :)

  50. Anonymous says:

    Oh…no. I feel your pain….

  51. keith ferguson says:

gwo- you can only have a “World Record” if there is “ONE” pattern.
sassmo, I know the left-right thing…..it still is all about luck…
    Now… my beginner score reads 6 seconds….interm….67…and w/o cheating….
    Expert…..236 still….
    I see the “YouTube” stuff but….w/o cheating I don’t see how…
The other day I was at 170 something with 3 left and f***ed up or I would be
more of a believer….it was such an easy set-up though…..so….to all of you
computer freaks with less than 100…get a life….lol
I play once or twice a week while waiting for emails…..Keith.

  52. klysha says:

Dang that has happened to me soooo many times and it sucks royally!!!!

  53. Cheko says:

    That has happened to me..

    My current scores are:

    Beginer 4 Seconds
    Intermediate 26 Seconds
    Expert 89 Secons

Me and my brother have had a competition doing this for about 5 years :D

  54. Dave says:

Ohh, it hurts when that happens. What a shame. Its just a coinflip at that point.

  55. jörg svenson says:

my best time in expert was 81 sec, i just didn’t right-clicked the mines, took too much time ^^

  56. amanda says:

that’s happened to me more than once >__<

  57. Anonymous says:

I’m not laughing at this, because it happens too much. It’s tragic, and should be mourned.

  58. Markoleptic says:

Ouch, I feel your pain. Maneuvered that 5 and 6 in the middle and then …

    rocked by the unknowable.

  59. Zero says:

Ouch, I HATE IT when that happens. Definite fail.

  60. Ryan says:

Having seen the source code for mine sweeper when I worked at MS, I can tell you that the only “cheating” that occurs, is that you CANNOT die on the first click. If there is a bomb under the cursor on the first click, it is moved somewhere else. Otherwise it is random placement, and speaking from experience I’ve been in this situation more times than I care to count. I got pretty good at mine sweeper, but there are always these coin toss moments; even more so when you are playing on expert.

  61. Max says:

    happens all the time.
I get 76 seconds on profi field! Anyone even close to that?

  62. Apersondude1 says:

oh man, and I was just about to post my failsweeper pic here………….oh well, congrats on the annoying fail!

  63. Cellie says:

    minesweeper = game that fails

  64. Sam says:

It’s not a 50/50 chance, look at the 1 next to the 3.

    • mci says:

      Wow, you are a moron.

The only “1″ that’s relevant is UNDER the 3. And it’s adjacent to both the possible locations for the bomb. There is no way to tell. Anyone with an IQ above 80 can see that clearly.

Really, there are so many imbeciles on this thread. Depresssing.

  65. Sam says:

Oh wait, forget that… I was never good with spacial awareness and what have you o.o
    Head, meet desk.

    • Marco says:

I played minesweeper for the Navy Seals for 7 years. Blew off both my arms!
Try playing minesweeper with no FU*&%@$ Arms!!! You bunch of pansies make me sick! I’ve got to go now, my nose is bleeding!

  66. Sankuro says:

    That always !@#$in sucks!

  67. Sankuro says:

    u fail..you photoshopped this image.

  68. Sankuro says:

I even see a little pure white spot near dogs nose.

  69. DawnOnYou says:

    hahahaha poor bastard.
    F2 to restart?

  70. Entropy says:

made me want to play minesweeper again, and guess how it turned out.
    i hate that game.

  71. JM says:

Happened to me before, many times.

But I managed 89 seconds on Expert. And J.K. Rowling only got down to 99. :D

  72. Marc says:

    Damn that stinks!

    My best times are:
    Beginner: 1 sec.
    Intermediate: 18 sec.
    Expert: 79 sec.

  73. sam i am says:

    happened to me before.

  74. Caerbannog says:

I’m actually found of those situations, and I collected around fifty of them myself :p
    http://martin.dallens.free.fr/minesweeper/

    • Fildon says:

      Hey Caerbannog…
I took a look at your link and checked your collection,
      16) you could have got that right! The ‘3′ to the bottom left of the unknown pair gives away the position of the mine.
      34) you could have got that right too! The ‘3′ to the bottom right of the unknown pair gives away the position of the mine.
      Pedantism over.

  75. Jimera0 says:

Yup I’ve had that happen to me more than once >.< whoever said it’s programmed not to do that obviously hasn’t played minesweepers very much recently…

  76. Alli says:

    i dont get it…

  77. Buzz Killington says:

This Conversation proves one thing: The people on failblog fail at minesweeper. Which is odd, since Failblog is basically a way to procrastinate. just like minesweeper. You would think that being good at one meant being good at the other?

  78. After seeing this, I was so overcome with empathy I punched myself in my own nuts.

  79. R Jensen says:

I can just imagine this guy… staring at his screen… “Where did I go wrong?”

  80. all of your fail says:

to everyone saying its obvious your an idot
    totally 50/50 chance >.<

  81. Mike says:

Plating this game at any date after 1997…FAIL.

  82. Sarah says:

WTF, I feel like such a n00b. Is this supose to be bad or what?
    I dont understand.

  83. St33v says:

Okay, just one more… which one…

    “bam”
    FUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!

  84. Sarah says:

LOL I HATE WHEN THAT HAPPENS.
However, I just start a new game when it does XP
I could probably play with my eyes closed, lol.

  85. Ajah says:

    Photoshopping FAIL into the picture…WIN!

    I’m a moron.

  86. Yoguybalk says:

I think it’s photoshopped with the fail in it.

  87. Carley says:

    Booooooommm…

  88. JubblyBubbly says:

It is 50/50, but I would always pick the one in the corner in that scenario.

  89. dukethepcdr says:

    Actually, they did pretty well.

  90. Guest1337 says:

    1. Anybody who thinks it wasn’t 50/50 is retarted
    2. I can totally imagine this guy spending hours clearing the rest of this, getting to these last 2 and screaming “WTF!?!!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?”

    • CapriceClassic says:

First of all, it’s not “retarTed, you idiot”, secondly if you KNEW anything about the game, you’d KNOW that whenever you see a 3, the bombs are DIRECTLY next to them, NOT ADJACENT, unless there is a 2 next to it, and CLEARLY there is no 2 next to the 3. So whoever picked the wrong square is an idiot JUST like you.

      • Eric says:

It’s hard to believe there is any debate about this.

Taken directly from instructions on how to play Minesweeper:
“If a number appears on a square, it indicates how many total mines are in the eight squares that surround the numbered one. You can use this number to help deduce whether a square is safe to uncover.”

Look at the square with the “3″ and the eight squares surrounding it. There are two squares we know are mines (that are marked). We can derive from this that only one of the remaining two squares is a mine and also that either one may be a mine.

Now, look at the square with the “1″ and the five squares surrounding it. There are no squares we know are mines (none are marked). We can derive from this that only one of the remaining two squares is a mine and also that either one may be a mine.

Therefore, since we have identical derivations for both the “3″ and “1″ squares, it is statistically a 50/50 chance that either square is a mine.

This dilemma occurs all the time when playing Minesweeper and proves that winning any permutation of Minesweeper doesn’t rely 100% on skill.

So many comments here can be used as FAIL.

SO UNLUCKY. I feel for you mate

I have been playing minesweeper since I was 7 years old, and I can say that this was a 50-50 chance. For all who have never played, and are over-zealously eager to sound intelligent and contradict the logic of the rules of the game (again, never having played) by reasoning that it was obvious:

    You = FAIL.

For all who HAVE played, and still want to contradict the logical reasoning of the game, and say that it wasn’t a 50-50 chance (thus stating that it was obvious):

    You = EPIC FAIL.

I’m just amazed at what people will argue over.

    THAT SUCKS.
Fortunately, I’m a Bookworm Adventures guy myself.

Oooooh, that makes me irritated just thinking about it. I would throw my computer out the window.
