I don’t see why this is surprising. The Pikachu in the television series owned by Ash is female – this is even said a few times through the series’ run and pretty obvious given Pikachu’s behavior.
Actually you are incorrect, it is male. This is based on the original character designer’s notes and comments. And also the fact that in the new D&P the female’s tails are different.
