LIES AND SLANDER! Floating multi-color circles are a natural occurrence that frequently appear in photos where things need to be pointed out. It’s a combination of air currents, condensation, light reflection, and a touch of magic. *sparkle sparkle*
Ummm, is it really that big of a deal?
Technically, an oval is a circle. But a circle isn’t an oval. It’s the same thing with squares. A rectangle is a square, but a square isn’t a rectangle. Get it?
Wrong way around, sorry. All squares are rectangles, the definition of a rectangle being ” A four sided, 2-dimensional shape where all angles are 90 degrees”. A square also has “four sides of equal length”
Well, guess someone has to point out the flaws in this one.
1 – missles launched first drop a few feet, to clear the aircraft, before igniting, that would simple drop it on the ground, and it wouldn’t fly forward so nicely
2 – There is no huge gout of flame.
3 – The safety can’t be removed while still on the airstrip. Might be different for carrier based aircraft, but I doubt it.
It’s probably not smoke, more likely just steam off the cat. I don’t know if it is real, or not, but more than likely, it wasn’t affixed correctly to an aircraft, or something broke on the launcher, and the aircraft launched off the cat, or on a trap and fell off. If the rocket was actually burning, the flame would definitely be visible.
1- The missile wasn’t launched, it came unlocked from its rail upon arrested landing. As an aside the sidewinder is rail launched by nitrogen and it shoots forward before the motor ignites, so fail again. The missile in this case was propelled by the magic we call inertia. The plane stopped, it didn’t.
2-There is no flame, only fail. It popped off the rail, it was not launched!
3-No safety interlock required, it wasn’t launched.
This is a known problem with the Sidewinder and F/A-18 rails, it has happened several times.
or the launching mechanism Failed while it was moving, causing the missile to fly away. i know, its not exactly likely, but just because it wasnt launched doesnt mean it didnt hapen
That’s the release of nitrogen gas. It has been cooled because of the pressure it was under, then, as it was released into the air, the water vapor condensed very quickly forming a mini-cloud! ^_^
There is also smoke just under the wing, right where the missile wouldv’e come from. Also, the crew member is looking at the missile, not the aircraft which would be more normal given that usually it’s the aircraft that can kill you. And, if she is about to launch, the RBF tags are off. And the missile is skidding along on its fins, which if I remember right are always deployed on a sidewinder.
That really happens pretty often on the loder style LAU-7 missile launchers. It’s not fake. Sometimes when the plane makes an arrested landing, the inertial forces are enough to push the missile off the plane. It didn’t launch, it just fell off. Still, that’s 500 pounds of pointy metal traveling about 120 miles an hour in a crowded area.
Don’t forget: in addition to being 500 pounds of pointy metal traveling at about 120 miles an hour in a crowded area, a significant portion of that weight is made up of high explosives. Yeah, it’s not armed, but impact detonation is possible with lots of high explosives, and the inertia that thing has is potentially enough to trigger it.
Odds are, though, it just goes flying off the end of the ship (hopefully).
That photo was taken in 1987 aboard USS Midway (CV-41). The sidewinders had a bad habit of popping off the launchers during arrested landings. The problem was eventually fixed. (yes, I was there)
It’s not photoshopped actually. Saw the whole case on t.v not too long ago. Something to do with the pilot turning on the engine and causing a short circuit to the firing mechanism because the missle lock key wasn’t in place when they were refuelling.
Actually it’s not photoshopped. I saw the whole case on a documentary not too long ago. Apparently when the pilot turned on the engine it caused a short circuit to the lauch mechanism because the missle lock key wasn’t in place during refuelling.
I have to go with the “fell off” theory. The photo doesn’t look photoshoped, there are proper shadows on the missle and the smoke is properly dispersed in a flat pattern over the deck. It is true however that that probably wasn’t actually fired because:
1. The millions of redundant safety devices prevent that from happening.
2. There is no flame coming from the back, nor is there any heat distortion.
3. Honesty, do you think a trained U.S military pulled the trigger on a carrier just for shits and giggles?
I think that the thing flew off on a short stop, and the smoke is the result of it scraping along the deck.
trained U.S. military personal shoot there friendlies in the back all the time on accident and “millions” of safety devices fail but still it fell or there would be fire not just smoke and that smoke isn’t thick enough to be from the thing going off anyway
When I started reading these comments, I was thinking “Man, that’s cool! But it probably didn’t happen.” Halfway down, I had heard the more logical explanation of an arrested landing, thus giving me a newfound respect for this picture. By the end of these comments, I just hate humanity.
I must agree. It is amazing on how dumb some people can be. Or what huge assholes the others are.
In fact, I believe the world is made of of three types of people. One part are the idiots. The other are the assholes. And the last one, the smallest of them all, are the normal people who are nice, polite, respect humanity, smart, and. unfortunately, are being taken over by the other parts due to brainwashing TV and music..
It is real. It was on the USS Midway around 1988 when we first got Hornets. The missle fell off during the trap, not launched. The “smoke” is debris where the missile was skipping along the deck, since the Midway did not have a waist cat. It was a defect in the wingtip station, and the Hornets did not have anything there for several months while the MacAir reps got a fix.
The funny things was there was another photo taken just before this one, where the plane director was heading the other way to begin directing the plane out of the wires. Pretty funny when seen side by side.
I was on the USS Constellation (CV -64) in 1988 and I saw the same thing happen. Again on the trap, the sidewinder just fell into the water off the angle deck.
Mabye there was a spider on the fire button, and instead of screaming like a little girl he’d squish it…..then again he was probably screaming like a little girl after the missle fired anyway
Okay, just clearing this up. I know it’s old, but I have to just say it. This plane is landing, not taking off. The missile is not from another plane. It is from the one in the pic. Now, when fighters land on carriers, they hook one of three (maybe four, someone correct me if I’m wrong) cables on the deck, which is designed to allow the jet to stop using a much smaller length. In other words, these things really jerk to a stop. Now, I don’t know about the whole F/A-18 and AIM-9 problem, but, if it happened, then what would have happened here is, when this plane jerked to a stop, and the missile came loose, the missile would continue forward (inertia), while also falling toward the deck. The smock you see is (most likely) the smoke of the fighter coming to rest.
Don’t blame the pilot, this happens on Aircraft carriers normally. Landings are still known as controlled crashes! (Whoever anon is they are very well informed).
A couple things to add to anon’s post:
The deceleration experienced by a jet once it has snagged the carrier’s arrester wire (of which there are four) is on the order of 2.75 Gs forward (depending on the speed of the aircraft). This makes the 190 lbs Aim-9 missile weigh approximately 520 lbs. Jets can experience high G-forces in tight turns, but they are acted upon vertically, as opposed to the horizontal G-force experienced in acceleration and deceleration. Therefore the missile and the missile rails would be built to take regular 6-9 G turns, but not necessarily high G deceleration, as that is only experienced on aircraft carriers or in a crash.
As for the smoke, I believe the most plausible explanation is the fins scraping the deck, as
1) If the smoke was nitrogen, which, if Navy Fail’s above post is correct, is released after launch but prior to the rocket ignition, then the missile must have been launched. It hasn’t (see above posts for justification). You can see a later picture here: http://www.micom.net/oops/Loose2.jpg.
2) There is smoke near the main gear of the F-18, none for the next 20 ft or so, and then it re-appears where the missile would have hit the deck.
totally fake. one, that would never happen, period. two, the shadow under the missile is wrong for where the sun is in the sky. and three, theres no freaking wash from the engine on the missile. EPPPPIIIICCCCC photoshop fail!
Can you imagine the pilot? “I didn’t do it!”
I would call this a “immenint fail” or as the running guy would call it,”imminent fa”*BOOOOOM*”AAAGHHH”
he was too big and hit some buttons as he was getting in
that circle is photoshopped.
NOSHIT. :\
LIES AND SLANDER! Floating multi-color circles are a natural occurrence that frequently appear in photos where things need to be pointed out. It’s a combination of air currents, condensation, light reflection, and a touch of magic. *sparkle sparkle*
O
Technically, if its printed, its then called “Libel”.
Just letting you know.
label?
Multi-color? Don’t know about you, but I just see white.
white is just a cobination of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet
fail for knowing that
actually, in this case, just red green and blue.
-The more you know.
Hahaha XD
I totally agree with you. Floating circles are totally natural and can be explained by science. ^.^
xD that made me lol so hard
and dont forget 7 teaspoons of pixi dust too. XD
oh yeah and the fgjklhgkdmkjdfkhgjkl……sorry i snorted spicy chili paste.
HAHAHAHAHA chili paste.
Super Scientific Explanation WIN!
No shit, Sherlock. How did you figure that out?
does sarcasm not exist around here?
I dont think it does
Only Grammar (Y)
it does on catarday
This just in. We have just learned that Captain Obvious’ online name is asdf.
Lol i think he was joking cos everyone always cries “FAKE” and “PHOTOSHOPPED !”
This just in. We have just learned that Captain Obvious 2’ online name is Jordan.
captain obius 3 is louis!
looks like paint to me, but i’m not a circle expert.
by the way, it’s actually an oval.
By your comment, you seem to be more of an oval expert
I’ve consulted the oval office; it’s definitely an oval.
lies!
the oval has sides
therefore is not oval
clearly an ellipse
Ummm, is it really that big of a deal?

Geometry fail.
This hurts my head, everything’s backwards
FAIL!
a circle is an oval
oval is not circle
circle has same radius all the way around
You need photoshop for a circle? I would just use paint.
FAIL!
intelligence fail
DUH
win.
O RLY?

asdf makes it worth getting up in the morning
He makes it worth staying in bed.
asdf makes suicide worth it.
asdf is just an idiot, and should be ignored.
asdf is the new anonymous.
asdf is worth killing a baby
Not to worry, according to the Patriot Act, that missile fired killed important terrorists that were endangering our freedoms and our way of life.
That made me laugh more than the picture did
Thumbs Up to you, good sir.
tax dollars hard at work, ladies and gents

You fail physics.

that’s the coolest running pose
This can’t be fake!!! Nooooooooo!!!

[...] by the popularity of this blog you would think people find it acceptable to fail. Our society is so geared up to succeed that it [...]
I think it’s real. It’s pretty cool.
“What really happened to the USS Cole”
OK maybe that was in bad taste.
Someone probably made a fake because the running guy begs for it. In this case, I think a fake can be appreciated.
I assumed it just fell off the previous plane that launched off the catapult
asdf = funny is talking to asdf because asdf has a long history of being an unfunny retard and he finally made a funny joke. The name is satirical.

The pilot was probably skipping a couple of steps in his manual and already at
666. KILL THEM ALL LET GOD SORT ‘EM OUT!
I agree with the fell off theory. When a plane hits the cables, sometimes entire missile racks come loose due to a failure to mount it properly.
The circle is not photoshopped! It looks MSPainted to me!
@alcari
if im right, the aim 9 sidewinders dont drop wen they launch, u must be thinking of the aim 7, which does drop like 5 feet till it launches
The smoke in the top left corner looks like where it ignited and flew off…. and that circle is msPaint fo sure!
That photo was taken in 1987 aboard USS Midway (CV-41). The sidewinders had a bad habit of popping off the launchers during arrested landings. The problem was eventually fixed. (yes, I was there)
it’s a weapons malfunction. shit happens. pretty funny though.

I added the circle as some people don’t know what a misfired (or inertially propelled) missile looks like.
Former USN fail for ” ‘think’ headed.”
this was on NGC and Discovery channel .. (Not the photo but the story and how this happened)
When I started reading these comments, I was thinking “Man, that’s cool! But it probably didn’t happen.” Halfway down, I had heard the more logical explanation of an arrested landing, thus giving me a newfound respect for this picture. By the end of these comments, I just hate humanity.

something like this happened on the forestal, only that one the missile actually got fired and started a massive fire which almost sunk the ship.

FAAAAAAAKE! I CAN SEE THE STRINGS!
this is how they clear the pigeons of the runway
The US army strikes again!
posing for picture but thats just sompthing someone would say i beleve its real but thats what someone who dosent thing its real would say
ziggy-buggy-doog.
Atleast it is not a cluster bomb…
I saw the complete video of this on this discovery channel. This is real, I think.
Just so you know whether or not this is photoshopped the missile will not explode if it’s not armed the plane will just run it over
Ok…. Back to the pict we go *magicly rewinds time * oh $hit RUN boy RUN
speling fale.
“oops. thought the red button under the plastic non-fail cover that we learned about for several months was the takeoff button.”
get out of the way! lol.
