Short, wide, boxy boats can be harder to roll than long, slim, rounder ones. I’ve surfed waves at least twice this size in my 18′ (5.8 m) long Mariner II, and it is easier to roll after flipping than some short, wide whitewater boats. OTOH, it’s pretty hard to keep going straight down the wave, and no way can I cut back.

Long kayaks are much faster, but can’t turn as quickly, and if you flip one, it’ll be tricky to right it again.
