A History of Presidential Fails

John Adams tried to ban all opposition parties, and ordered his vice president, Thomas Jefferson overseas so that he would face no opponents in the next election.

Jefferson, for his part, laid off the entire navy and most of the army, leaving us practically defenseless.

James Madison tried to lead the defense of Washington in the war of 1812. By nightfall, Washinton was burning.

John Q. Adams wasn’t actually elected. He came into office thanks to intrigue in the senate.

Andrew Jackson forcibly removed thousands of Cherokees from their homes in Georgia, and helped create a financial panic by abolishing the national bank.

William Henry Harrison died of numonia less than a month after being elected. He caught it giving a three hour speech in the pooring rain.

John Tyler (a.k.a “His Accidency) was roundly ignored by congress throughout his term and did nothing of note.

James Polk got us into a war with Mexico over land, and rejected Mexico’s surrender until overruled by congress.

James Buchannen made no effort to stop widespread violence in Kansas and later spoke out in favor of its pro-slavery constitution. He also created a major economic crash, and moved large amounts of National Guard weapons to the South just before the Civil War. Most of his Cabinet later served with the Confederacy.

Ulyssus Grant was notorious for his incompotence. He had no idea how to run the country, and so allowed his old army buddies- who turned out to be exceptionally corrupt- to do it for him. He wanted to run for a thrid term, but his party wouldn’t let him.

Benjamin Harrison sent the country into an inflationary spiral when he took us off the gold standard.

Warren J. Harding was chosen as a canidate by the party bosses specificly because they knes he was weak and easily controlled. He often threw drunken all night poker games- during prohabition! His interior secretary illigally sold off part of the federal oil reserves. On the few occasions when he couldn’t be persuaded to sign a law by party bosses, his friends got him drunk and tricked him into signing.

Hebert Hoover tried to stave off the Great Depressinon by raising tarrifs. This only discouraged trade and helped make the depression worldwide.

FDR still holds the record for most laws found unconstitutionall. His Nationall Recovery Act provided for the strict regulation of practially every business in America, right down to the number of dancers that could be on stage at strip clubs. Other programs included slaughtering pigs and pouring milk down stormdrains to keep farm prices high.

Truman responded to a major steelworker strike by trying to nationalize the industry.

JFK’s ill conceived Bay of Pigs Invasion, and a yearlong series off attemps to assassinate Fidel Castro not only drove the CIA into the ground, but also helped cause the CUban missile crisis. His executive order unionizing the federal work force led to the present day government pension crisis, and there are still unanswered questions about his ties to the mafia.

LBJ not only escalated the war in Vietnam, he micro-managed it to the point of bragging that “They (the Air Force) can’t bomb an out-house without my say so.” His “Great Society” and “War on Poverty” did not eliminate or even reduce poverty. It did insure a reliable source of Democratic votes by creating a permanate wellfare class.

As for Nixon, Watergate. ‘Nuff Said

Jimmy Carter tried to pull U.S forces out of South Korea, despite the protests of the Army, and the South Korean People! He presided over double diget inflation and the highest ever prices for gasoline, when adjusted for inflation. He was also unable to find a solution to the Iranian hostage crisis, which he helped cause by telling the the French that it was alright for them to send the Ayatollah back to Iran.

Reagan paid so little attention to the activities of his staff that the Iran-Contra affair was carried out complety without his knowledge.

Bush senior went back on his pledge of no new taxes.

Clinton also failed to follow up on pledged tax cuts. He tried to cover up his affair with Monica Lewinski, commiting over 130 counts of perjury in the process. He also had the IRS audit the National Review after it published a series of investigative reports on his real estate dealings.
Between the 2000 election and when he left office, he passed several laws that congress had never voted on, including a repetative stress injury law that would have made imployers liable for all injuries suffered by their employees, whether work related or not. Finally, while moving out of the White House, the Clintons took several pieces of furniture that didn’t actually belong to them.
