I would rather say that this is an e-mail classic. Once in a while this image shows up in different versions in various joke e-mails, such as:
“What would it be like if George Bush was…
    …the captain of a ship?”

  9. Scott A says:

Looks like that ship either went through a bad storm or was loaded improperly.

In any case, I’d be surprised if it wasn’t about to capsize. Those containers can weigh upwards of 50 tons, depending on what’s in them.

Like, for instance, stacked hardwood. Those things are usually around 15 feet tall by 50 feet long, if I remember right. That’s a LOT of weight.

    Poor failboat.

  10. s says:

haha i feel sorry for the captain

  11. Tim says:

    Funny detail:

‘Trieste’ means ‘sad one’ in Dutch.

    Very, very, sad fail.

  12. UndertheRadar says:

I just noticed- it looks like “HAHAHAAHAHHAA” underneath the containers!!

  13. Alwin says:

Scott A, 50ft is impossible since these containers come in either 20′ or 40′. For the 40′ load capacity is 60 tons. Trust me, the harbour had one hell of a time to get those containers ashore. Imagine your new Ford Mustang ’08 being in one of those.. Very sad fail, this one.

  14. anonymous says:

    this is my background lol

  15. Benjamin says:

    This is a fake photo.
First of all, the (green) container at the far right side is floating in the air. There is nothing below to carry the weight.
Second, if all of the containers weighed at least 5 tons a piece, and up to 60 tons, it would be impossible for anything to tip them over
Third, why is the ship moving? That would be a very bad move if this had really happened.
(And last, who took this picture? The crew from the container ship, who thought it would be funny to get in a rescue boat, and sail behind the ship while taking a picture? Some stranger accidentally passing by? Superman?)

    • John Spiers says:

No, it’s real. Containers are lashed down with cables thick enough to hold the one that seems to be floating in the air. Next, this happened on the high seas and is now in port, so the perspective is not problem.

On the high seas a storm can rock a ship to the degree is yields these results. You can find hundreds of pictures of containers dangling in odd ways, this is famous for its precariousness and symmetry.

The ship has to continue into port for the longshoremen to unload it. They will do so. Further shifting and loss from moving is possible and likely but unavoidable.

Quite real, and this is what Marine Insurance is all about.

This answer helps divide the long-term arcs into two categories: plot arcs that posit enigmas and mysteries, and relationship or character arcs that are more clearly delimited in the moment. ,
