I only know what an epoch is because I played Empire Earth 2. Awesome joke, though.
This is a Unix in-joke. The Unix C function for the present wall clock time returns seconds since something like Dec 31 1970, or something. This is the Unix epoch. You could conceivably write a program which screws up like this, if you suck enough. Fail. Epoch Fail.
I know this is over a year old, but I feel the need to point out that it began Jan 1, 1970.

This is funny because in programming languages the date variables are just and integer which is the number of milliseconds since January 1st, 1970…. Newbs….
Yet it might be an unsigned integer in this specific code, causing problems with assignment to dates before 1970.
Easy thing to over look, I think. I’ve done it a bit myself. :3
more like epoch win!!! (it was a play on words… 1970 is a period in time… an epoch?? so instead of saying “epic”… ugh do I really have to type it out this much?? you get it right?? RIGHT?? why is this comic here!? I love XKCD… it’s smarter than however posted this here as a “fail” and not as a “win”…).

Epoch = Epic for anyone who missed that part of the joke, and no smart-asses I’m not saying that epoch literally means epic, it’s just part of the joke. I noticed some people didn’t get it, it’s more than just a reference. I believe we need to open some less fortunate people’s eyes to the humour that they’ve been missing. And humour is spelled correctly, I am Canadian and we put the u in humour.
