Every XKCD has a “bonus gag” in the “title” tag for the image. This one should say “The universe started in 1970. Anyone claiming to be over 38 is lying about their age.” when you hover over the image.
This is a Unix in-joke. The Unix C function for the present wall clock time returns seconds since something like Dec 31 1970, or something. This is the Unix epoch. You could conceivably write a program which screws up like this, if you suck enough. Fail. Epoch Fail.
This is funny because in programming languages the date variables are just and integer which is the number of milliseconds since January 1st, 1970…. Newbs….
more like epoch win!!! (it was a play on words… 1970 is a period in time… an epoch?? so instead of saying “epic”… ugh do I really have to type it out this much?? you get it right?? RIGHT?? why is this comic here!? I love XKCD… it’s smarter than however posted this here as a “fail” and not as a “win”…).
Epoch = Epic for anyone who missed that part of the joke, and no smart-asses I’m not saying that epoch literally means epic, it’s just part of the joke. I noticed some people didn’t get it, it’s more than just a reference. I believe we need to open some less fortunate people’s eyes to the humour that they’ve been missing. And humour is spelled correctly, I am Canadian and we put the u in humour.
Haha, yeez.
I don’t get it… It’s a little too early… WTF??
i think its a chrono trigger reference
nop, is not

haha, but i’ve played chrono trigger, is one of my favorite games (Y)

Wow…Wikipedia? Really? FAIL. XD
GraphJam’s graphs ARE correct!
wow, fairly esoteric fail, don’t you think?
Wow… Epic Fail ^
Posting XKCD feels like cheating…
You should add the mouse over text in.
I can’t find this comic on XKCD with the search feature…
SEArCH ENGINE FAIL!
Nevermind, it’s named Bug and it’s #376 from Friday and there is no more to it anyway. But I give their search function a FAIL which I have submitted!
There is more.

no it’s just a drawing.
cleverness fail.
…You ARE kidding, yes? I have no hope for the future of the internet with these anons taking over.
AAAHHH!!! PHOTOSHOP!!!
No, probably MS Paint.
Program identification fail
Yeah, the reflections are all wrong.
You read XKCD a lot, don’t you?
Brownie point for contextually relevant reference.
(Bonus link for those who don’t get it: http://xkcd.com/331/ )
LOL @ Hat.
Beautifully done.
XKCD ftw.
xkcd Represent!
xkcd represents what? Would you like an object with that verb?
Xkcd fails. Hard.
your face fails hard.
Ha! That’s hilarious. So is this comic. I <3 Randall Munroe and anyone that uses "face" in a sentence.
xkcd fails for making a joke about failing? By that logic, you should fail, too.
Reading is tech. Read the comments above you.
I only know what an epoch is because I played Empire Earth 2. Awesome joke, though.

I know this is over a year old, but I feel the need to point out that it began Jan 1, 1970.
FIRST
face smack

Yet it might be an unsigned integer in this specific code, causing problems with assignment to dates before 1970.
Easy thing to over look, I think. I’ve done it a bit myself. :3

My apologies I didn’t realize someone else had brains, your post wasn’t on this page when I posted it. In further note: I concur.
heads with no eyes, says a lot about the cartoonist…FAIL
YOU FAIL
xkcd = epic win
I hope you insult Hat Guy someday. Then you’ll get what’s coming to you.
